By recent standards, this is already a successful Australian Open for the American men. Two are through to the third round as of Thursday afternoon Australia time and both John Isner and Steve Johnson have advanced in convincing fashion. But it could be oh so much better.
There was something wrong with Roger Federer's hand in this match. At the time, at least, no one had a guess as to what -- perhaps an insect bite or a blister. It made things difficult early on, but obviously he got over it! He leaves Simone Bolelli around the #48 ranking he came in with.

Top seed Novak Djokovic showed no sign of the stomach virus which laid him low last week as he joined holder Stan Wawrinka with an overwhelming win into the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday. Djokovic put aside his early loss in Doha which got his 2015 preparation off to a poor start, with the world number one bossing Slovenian Aljaz Bedene 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

After a wild first round highlight by some outstanding wins for the host nation, there is no rest for the weary. Second-round action will get underway on Wednesday, with both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal taking the court. A throng of Aussies including Bernard Tomic and Nick Kyrgios will also be looking for more success.

Second seed Roger Federer led fellow tennis elites Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray into the second round of the Australian Open on Monday's opening day with a crushing 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 defeat of Lu Yen-Hsun. The Swiss followed on nicely from his ATP title eight days ago in Brisbane. Federer, 33, is bidding to become the second man in history to win five Melbourne singles titles.
It was a day that will not soon be forgotten Down Under. Six Aussie men advanced to the second round on day one at the Australian Open, and four did it in five sets. This is the 103rd edition of the Australian Championships, which began in 1905, as well as being the 47th Australian Open and the 188th Grand Slam tournament of the Open Era. Melbourne Park hosts the tournament for the 28th year. It was first played here in 1988, when the venue was known as Flinders Park.
