Former grand slam finalist Marcos Baghdatis beat Miguel Angel Reyes of 6-2 6-4, American Donald Young put out Finn Jarkko Nieminen 6-3 6-3 and Rio finalist Alexandr Dolgopolov started with a defeat of eighth seed Vasek Pospisil 6-2, 6-2.
Top seed Tommy Haas continued to break barriers at age 35, advancing in his opening match over Wayne Odesnik in well under an hour. "With injuries, I lost probably three or four years of my career," said the 12th-ranked Haas.

At the age of 32, Filippo Volandri was by far the oldest contestant in the ATP Challenger Tour Finals but the Italian still came out on top in Sao Paolo, Brazil and won the title by overcoming Colombian Alejandro Gonzalez (eight years his junior) in the final.
Sixth seed Santiago Giraldo claimed a home win at the inaugural edition of the tournament which was formerly played in Los Angeles, with the Colombian defeating No. 310 Carlos Salamanca 6-2, 6-4
