Kei Nishikori had struggled all the way to the final here. Kevin Anderson had looked very solid. So what happened come the final? Nishikori was in pretty complete charge.

This wasn't a particularly long match -- about an hour and forty minutes, and it would have been shorter had Stan Wawrinka not fired multiple lets on match points -- but if Wawrinka wants to get his ranking back up, he'll need to do better than this. He still needs at least three more wins to rise above his current #8.
Milos Raonic sealed his debut with a 19th ace to see off Russian qualifier Alexander Kuznetsov 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-5. The Canadian second seed needed a comeback after losing the opening set to the No. 88 before taking control in the second set and keeping up the pressure in the third to book into the second round.
Maria Sharapova had little time to digest her 6-3, 7-6(5) loss in the final of the Australian Open against Serena Williams, with the Russian finalist flying out of Melbourne at the weekend and back to the European winter. The No. 2 who suffered her 16th straight loss to Serena in the Australian Open final, is playing Fed Cup for Russia in Krakow against Poland.
When it came to interruptions, this match had almost everything. A spectator invaded the court in the second set. Everyone was trying to hear if Andy Murray's girlfriend Kim Sears would use impolite words again (there is no firm evidence either way, but she did show up in a T-shirt carrying a "parental advisory").
This lets Simona Halep defend her points -- and that means that she has also defended the #3 ranking. Petra Kvitova will remain stuck at #4. Yanina Wickmayer remains stuck below #65, but she seems finally to be coming back to life; her results here gained her more than a dozen ranking spots.
When Rafael Nadal comes out of a funk, he really comes out of a funk! Hard to believe he could still lose the #3 ranking to Kei Nishikori. Of course, if he keeps playing like this, he won't lose it. He leaves Kevin Anderson still at #15.

Serena Williams got off to another of her slow starts here; that seems almost standard operating procedure these days. She was down a break for most of the first set -- and then she got things together. She needs a lot more to assure the #1 ranking, though. Vera Zvonareva at least earned enough points that she ought to hit the Top 200.
Kei Nishikori takes another small step toward a career-high #4 ranking. The leading threat to him isn't even current #4 Wawrinka; it's Milos Raonic.
