After a dramatic completion to a suspended semifinal, the French Open doubles final is set, with No.4 seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci taking on No.7 seeds Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova on Friday. Kirilenko and Petrova rallied from 64 41 down to split sets with fifth-seeded Czechs Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka on Wednesday before darkness suspended play.
Sara Errani stands only 5-feet-4 inches tall, but she has proved in reaching the Roland Garros semifinals that height doesn’t matter as much as some might think. Errani moves like the wind and hits a very heavy ball. She credits her change of racket to Babolat for her torrid season, where she has won three titles and reached her first final four of a major.
This match took a lot of time start-to-finish, but that is mostly because of a rain delay in the middle. Nicolas Almagro never did much to threaten Rafael Nadal.
What this would have been like had Kaia Kanepi not been so nervous we can hardly guess. But Kanepi clearly was nervous, and never put up much of a fight. We show her ending up at #16 -- meaning, incidentally, that Sara Errani will be #14.
