Purchasing an available week on the WTA calendar in order to expand the Montreal/Toronto tournaments does not seem to be an option for Tennis Canada officials. With the August San Diego event on the market, the question was brushed aside by Toronto tournament director Karl Hale. “We’ve had no discussions in trying to split the weeks or anything at this time. We are just focused on the events, the virtual combined concept (both played in the same week). As you see, the TV product is fantastic, and we’re just going forward with that at this time. . . Tennis Channel, will launch an online store today featuring network merchandise and gear. . . According to PayScale.com, the typical salary for a U.S. tennis coach was between $24,240 and $47,779 in 2010. . . US Davis Cup captain Jim Courier gives Canada a good chance in next month’s semi-final in Belgrade against Serbia. “Given where the Davis Cup schedule sits and the format as it is right now, if things go to form, Novak Djokovic doesn’t get to Serbia until I believe late Wednesday after a charity event on Tuesday night in New York (following the US Open). Irrespective if he’s in the finals in the US Open Monday, he would become less than 100 percent for that event, so advantage Canada from a scheduling standpoint even though you’re playing away.” . . . Barron’s reports that Sloane Stephens is set to announce multi-year deals with annual payments in the mid-six figures, with both American Express and Johnson & Johnson’s Listerine brand. She already has deals with both UnderArmour and Head, and her off-court income could climb to around $4 million in the from the mid-six figures during the next two years. , , Victoria Azarenka, who pulled out of Toronto last week, says that her hip and leg injuries are now healed. . . .Rafael Nadal on whether it’s possible to schedule properly: “ I will say in a sport like tennis, my feeling is everybody who says, I find the perfect schedule, everybody’s lying. Because in tennis, when you prepare your schedule, you don’t know if you will play one match, two, three, four, or five. You can lose in the first round, so the schedule is changing a lot. You cannot predict which result you’re going to have in the tournament.” . . . Andy Murray didn’t see himself in a positive light prior to winning the 2012 US Open: “I think the last year has almost changed my perception of myself,” Murray said. “When you lose a lot of big matches, and even when you’re being successful in other tournaments, you’re still getting asked about why you aren’t winning the big, big matches. It does make you feel a bit like a loser. That’s obviously changed in the last year or so. I think when I’m in those sort of positions in the future – in the semis or finals of Grand Slams – I should have a bit more confidence in myself, and hopefully that will help me.”
