The event which is already short the injured (hamstring) Maria Sharapova lost world No. 3 Victoria Azarenka through a late pullout after the weekend Carlsbad finalist took a wild card and then withdrew due to back pain. Azarenka has played just one event since rolling her ankle and withdrawing from Wimbledon in the second round.
She was joined as an absentee by British No. 1 Laura Robson, who withdrew before her opening match with a wrist injury and tweeted her apologies to fans. Robson’s place was taken by American lucky loser Bethanie Mattek-Sands. whose appearance was brief as she lost to Begian Yanina Wickmayer 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
2011 champion Serena Williams heads the field which includes Wimbledon winner Marion Bartoli, playing for the first time since her career-defining triumph after pulling out of Stanford and Carlsbad with a lingering hamstring problem..
On court Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands beat American Alison Riske 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 and Varvara Lepchenko of the US advanced over Japan’s Ayumi Morita 6-3, 6-1. Dominika Cibulkova won an all-Slovak battle over countrywoman Jana Cepelova 7-5 6-4; Sorana Cirstea beat Olga Savchuk 6-2, 6-3 and German Mona Barthel beat China’s Zheng Jie 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-6(1). Italian tenth seed Roberta Vinci defeated Julia Goerges of Germany 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. There was a win for Italian Flavia Pennetta over Carlsbad quarter-finalist Urszula Radwanska 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
