Swiss hopes for the Montreal Masters rest of the power of healing, with both Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka nursing back pain problems. Federer was dealt out in his opening match last week at home in Gstaad, finishing out his loss to Daniel Brands in straight sets.
It went ever worse for No. 10 Wawrinka, who had to quit after two hours and nearly three sets with back worries against Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. The exits were a double blow to organizers who had added 800 extra seats – and quickly sold out the weekend — with hopes of a Swiss on show.
Instead, the final was played between Mikhail Youzhny and Robin Haase.
Wawrinka and Federer are both dealing with their back troubles in hopes of feeling fit enough to fly to Canada this week for the start of the hardcourt run-up to the US Open.
Retirement was a bitter blow for Wawrinka, winner of the spring clay title in Lisbon and Madrid Masters finalist against Rafael Nadal. “I can’t say exactly when in the match it happened,” said Swiss. “I definitely felt something back there during training last week.
“Ï’m so disappointed that it had to happen here in Gstaad, it almost seems like bad luck for me here. I have to get it looked at by doctors and then rest and take a decision on what do to next.
“This is a delicate part of the season: I’m playing well but I don’t want to risk any injury,
I’ll just have to see how it responds to treatment.”
