Benoit Paire may be one of the most upwardly mobile players on the ATP World Tour, the Frenchman currently ranked 27th in the world and showing all the signs of being able to rise much higher, but he is stands out for another reason; being one of the few to openly criticize Wimbledon as a sub-standard tournament.
Paire was understandably in a bad mood. On his fourth visit the London SW19 he had again failed at the third round stage, losing out to Poland’s Lukacz Kubot and looking pretty much second best throughout his 6-1,6-3,6-4 mauling.
First the 25th seed vented his anger by smashing his racket against a wall as he left Court 18. Then Paire, who seemed at one with the Wimbledon grass after hitting 26 aces and 64 winners in his first round 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Romanian Adrian Ungur, went even further when it came to discussing his experiences of Wimbledon’s first week.
“I don’t like Wimbledon,” he Paire told French newspaper, L’Equipe . “When I enter on the court they tell us we have to be careful with the courts but the courts are not so good.
“Once I got a $1000 fine for saying ‘Merde’. Here all they like is giving fines. Maybe thanks to that they will be able to fix the courts.”
Paire was clearly mindful of his compatriots Michael Llodra and Paul-Henri Mathieu being amongst the numerous players forced to quit their matches at Wimbledon’s after getting injured on the slick All England Club courts.
