Federer Sees Remainder Of The Draw As Opportunity For Underdogs

While he doesn’t believe that the ground at the top of tennis is shifting despite early ousters for himself and rival Rafael Nadal at the Wimbledon Championships, Roger Federer understands that things are not quite the same in the game which he and the Spaniard have all but ruled for nearly a decade.

With both of the elites out by the second round at the upset-marred edition, Federer admits that underdogs may be starting to get a look-in. “I think there was a time where some players didn’t believe they could beat the top guys,” said the 17-time grand slam champion. “So maybe there’s a little bit of a thing happening at the moment.

“I’m happy about that, that players believe they can beat the best on the biggest courts in the biggest matches.” The Swiss called the concept “very important” and would not be sorry for it to continue and build.

“We’re missing the teenagers (in the top part of the rankings) overall, so it’s up to other guys to do it like we’ve seen this week, and at other places as well. All we can do is give it all we have, be a professional, train hard, do all the right things that you’re supposed to be doing – and hope they are also doing it if they’re lower in the rankings.”

With his Wimbledon over, Federer is not changing a thing. “You’ve just got to reassess at the end of the season. If you do it during, there’s got to be a good reason for it. I’ve been playing okay, I’m healthy again, and I’m happy about that.

“I’m not playing every other tournament with some issues. So I’m looking forward to playing hopefully injury- free for the rest of the season, then we’ll go from there.”
