Eastbourne

Singles – Semifinal: Jamie Hampton def. (5) Caroline Wozniacki 6-7(8-10) 7-5 6-3

There almost seems to be a rule that Jamie Hampton comes to life only when her opponent is serving for the match. Yes, it happened here again, in the second set. Caroline Wozniacki went away for about four games, and it cost her the match. She remains a very weak #9. But Hampton — who is in her first WTA final — will rise to at least #25. Win the title and it will be #22.

Singles – Semifinal: Elena Vesnina def. Yanina Wickmayer 6-2 6-0

This probably feels like an upset, but it isn’t. Elena Vesnina will be going for her second career title, and she and Hampton are right next to each other in the rankings. The winner will be #22, the loser #25. We show Yanina Wickmayer at #40.

Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Petrova/Srebotnik def. (4) Pennetta/Vesnina 7-6(7-3) 6-2

Funny that Nadia Petrova looked so bad in the singles but is doing just fine in the doubles.

Doubles – Semifinal: Niculescu/Zakopalova def. (3) Groenefeld/Peschke 4-6 6-3 10-1

Groenefeld/Peschke struggle again. Makes you wonder how much longer this team is going to last. They’re both doubles specialists, so they probably need to do better than they’re doing to survive.

‘s-Hertogenbosch

Singles – Semifinal: Simona Halep def. (3) Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3 6-2

It’s hard to believe Simona Halep will have anything left for Wimbledon, but what a run! Back-to-back finals, and nine straight wins. She is now up to probably #34.

Singles – Semifinal: (4) Kirsten Flipkens def. (Q) Garbine Muguruza 6-3 6-1

Kirsten Flipkens won’t rise above #20 no matter what happens in the final. But what a fascinating final — Flipkens having the best year of her career, Halep having the best two weeks of her career.

Doubles – Final: (2) Begu/Medina Garrigues def. Cibulkova/Parra Santonja 4-6 7-6(7-3) 11-9

The singles career of Anabel Medina Garrigues is clearly winding down, but this is her second doubles title this year (following Florianopolis with Shvedova), so clearly she still can accomplish things with the right partner. Good to see her training up the next generation. It’s the second career doubles title for Irina-Camelia Begu, following Hobart 2012.

Wimbledon

The draw is out, and of course the burning question was which have Maria Sharapova would be in. It turns out to be Victoria Azarenka’s; Serena Williams is drawn to face Agnieszka Radwanska in the semifinal. A nice balance, since the big question right now is surely whether Azarenka or Sharapova deserves to be #2.
