Roger Federer underlined the fact he is still very much a contender to successfully defend his position as the king of Wimbledon by winning his first title since last August.
Federer understandably feels at home in Halle, home of the Gerry Weber Open he has now won six times. The German town even has a street named after him – Roger-Federer-Allee.
The seven times Wimbledon champion was not exactly happy at his title drought and he said: “I’ve won a lot but not so much in the last 10 months, although I feel I’d been playing well. It was just the others were playing better.”
Federer is likely to be named third seed for the Championships where he will again have the honor of starting play on Wimbledon’s Centre Court next Monday and 1pm, the traditional role of the defending men’s champion.
“I feel fit,” said Federer who has now won 77 ATP World Tour titles which puts him equal with John McEnroe in the al- time list behind only Jimmy Connors(109 titles) and Ivan Lendl (94). “I feel confident. I’m excited about what’s to come. I’m very pleased with how I played this week.”
