The Bryan brothers have come a long way since their first French Open doubles title a decade ago, with the Californian twins notching their 14th major with a 6-4, 4-6 (7-6 (7-4) defeat of Frenchmen Michael Llodra and Nicolas Mahut at this edition.
The loss which left Mahut in tears during the trophy presentation, had exactly the opposite effect on the 35-year-old Bryans, who recalled their “dark” days of a decade ago in Paris. “I just remember we were sleeping on the floor at the Pierre et Vacances (hotel).
“We were trying to save a buck. It was just kind of a creepy roach motel. The lights ran on motion sensors, so it would be dark and it could be light and then be dark behind you,” said Bob Bryan.
“Now we have the suite at the Claridge. But, yeah, now we’re not so, I guess, frantic in these moments. We have been there before,” added the player who has won nearly $10 million in prize money, around the same amount as his sibling.
“I think it (the 2003 hotel) was only 100 Euros a night. Now Bob is paying 700 a night with extra room for the baby. The beds were horrendous. We put everything on the floor. There was one restaurant in the area – horrendous Chinese. I think we lost like ten pounds each because the food was so bad. We were getting so skinny and losing power on our shots. We had nothing left.”
