Sergio Chip of Palm Desert, Calif. Defeats San Diego’s Kerry Safdie in Three-Set First-Round Match
San Diego, Calif. – (June 3, 2013) – After receiving a first-round bye, defending men’s singles champion Clarke Spinosa of Claremont, Calif. will play his second round match of the USTA National Open Hard Court Championships at 10:30 a.m. (PDT) on Tuesday at the Balboa Tennis Club.
The top-seeded Spinosa, who plays for the University of San Diego, will face Alafia Ayeni of San Diego, a 6-1, 6-2, first-round winner over Gabriele Boccaccini of La Jolla, Calif.
In other first-round action on Monday, youth won over experience as 22-year-old Sergio Chip of Palm Desert, Calif. eliminated 42-year-old Kerry Safdie of San Diego, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 on Court No. 18.
“It was a good match. I made a lot of mistakes in the first set,” said Chip, who reached last year’s singles quarterfinals and doubles final at the Balboa Tennis Club. “I just put it in my mind to find my rhythm and get more focused. I knew I would get it sooner or later.”
Safdie, a local tennis teaching professional, played for San Diego State University from 1989 to 1993 and is the No. 1 ranked 40 and over player in San Diego . Chip played at College of the Desert in Palm Desert in 2011 and 2012 and will play at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. later this year.
Chip, who served as a hitting partner for Rafael Nadal and Bob and Mike Bryan at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif. in March, will face Gene Desrochers of Manhattan Beach, Calif. in a second round match on Tuesday.
Sabrina Santamaria of Los Angeles, the top seed in the women’s draw, withdrew due to a schedule conflict. Megan McCray of Oceanside, Calif., last year’s singles finalist, was moved to the No. 1 seed in the women’s draw.
Starting time for each day of the tournament will be 9 a.m. (PDT) through the conclusion of the event on Sunday, June 9. Admission for spectators is free and open to the public. On-site parking is free. Lunch can be purchased at Babycakes Balboa Park, a California casual café located at the Balboa Tennis Club.
Players will compete in Men’s Singles and Doubles, Women’s Singles and Doubles as well as Mixed Doubles. Consolation events in all divisions will also be offered. For complete tournament draws, go to: http://tennislink.usta.com/Tournaments/TournamentHome/Tournament.aspx?T=125688
