Roland Garros

Singles – Fourth Round: (1) Serena Williams def. (15) Roberta Vinci 6-1 6-3

We’ll assume you aren’t surprised by this result, and simply tell you that this means no Top Ten spot for Roberta Vinci; she will be within one spot of #12. Given the next result, #11 is a good bet.

Singles – Fourth Round: (4) Agnieszka Radwanska def. (14) Ana Ivanovic 6-2 6-4

Agnieszka Radwanska needed to be efficient here; this started very late, and she certainly didn’t want to have the match suspended. She made it with not much time to spare. Radwanska has clinched the #4 ranking; Ivanovic will likely be #12.

Singles – Fourth Round: (5) Sara Errani def. (20) Carla Suarez Navarro 5-7 6-4 6-3

Sara Errani has been busy lately — she’s in the singles, plus she’s been playing backed-up doubles matches — and she was having pains when breathing. It cost her the first set; she needed the trainer and some painkillers early on. Apparently it worked, since she kept getting stronger as the match proceeded. That is enough to move her from #7 to #6 in safe points; one more win would let her keep the #5 ranking. Carla Suarez Navarro will have to settle for #19.

Singles – Fourth Round: Svetlana Kuznetsova def. (8) Angelique Kerber 6-4 4-6 6-3

Finally, after almost half a year, Svetlana Kuznetsova starts to go deep in a tournament! It appears this will put her back in the Top Thirty. Angelique Kerber will gain at least one ranking spot, but she loses her Top Five chance.

Doubles – First Round: (7) Mattek-Sands/Mirza def. Cornet/Razzano 6-3 6-4

Mark down Bethanie Mattek-Sands as another with a legitimate gripe about the schedule here. She’s in the singles and the doubles, and she doesn’t play her first doubles match until Sunday?

Doubles – Second Round: Black/Erakovic def. (9) Groenefeld/Peschke 6-3 6-4

The only thing that makes this even slightly surprising is that it happened on clay, which isn’t a surface Cara Black likes much. But, right now, she seems to be a better player than either Groenefeld or Peschke. This means that neither Groenefeld nor Peschke will be Top Fifteen next week.

Doubles – Second Round: Husarova/Lisicki def. (15) H Chan/Jurak 6-0 5-7 6-1

Despite the seedings, we wouldn’t call this an upset; Husarova/Lisicki have a big edge in experience.

Doubles – Second Round: Schiavone/Stosur def. Date-Krumm/Parra Santonja 2-6 7-5 6-2

Doubles – Third Round: (3) Petrova/Srebotnik def. King/Niculescu 6-3 6-1

Nadia Petrova still looks like a woman who wants the #1 doubles rankings. Of course, it’s still the early rounds, before she has had time to get nervous.

Doubles – Third Round: (4) Makarova/Vesnina def. Jankovic/Lucic-Baroni 7-6(7-3) 6-4

Makarova and Vesnina defend their points; they now appear to have clinched their Top Ten spots. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) ERRANI ………….8455*

1..(1) VINCI …………. 8455*

3..(3) PETROVA ……….. 7075*

4..(4) HLAVACKOVA ………6720*

5..(5) HRADECKA ………..6166*

6..(6) SREBOTNIK ……… 5975*

7..(7) MAKAROVA ………..5500*

8..(9) VESNINA ……….. 5152*

9.(11) RAYMOND ……….. 4775*

10.(12) HUBER …………. 4425

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Jankovic/Paes def. Voskoboeva/Bracciali 7-5 6-3

What’s that old proverb again? “Old players never die, they just become mixed doubles specialists”? Leander Paes’s doubles ranking is going down fast, but he’s still the #1 man in mixed….

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (3) Srebotnik/Zimonjic def. Lim/Chardy 6-3 7-6(7-5)

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (4) Raymond/Soares def. Hlavackova/Dlouhy 6-2 4-6 14-12

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (5) Mladenovic/Nestor def. Zhang/Knowle 6-3 7-5

Daniel Nestor’s men’s doubles career is in pretty sad shape right now, but like Leander Paes, at least he can still play mixed….

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Grandin/Polasek def. (6) Groenefeld/Tecau 1-6 6-0 10-7

Mixed rankings said that Groenefeld/Tecau should have been unseeded — although, with a scoreline like that, it’s hard to know who “should” have been anything in this match….

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Black/Qureshi def. Hsieh/Nielsen 6-4 6-0

Mixed rankings would have left Black/Qureshi just short of a seed; little wonder they did well.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Hradecka/Cermak def. Hantuchova/Rojer 7-6(7-5) 6-2

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Petrova/Cabal def. Rodionova/S Gonzalez 6-3 6-2

Not even a weak partner is slowing down Nadia Petrova so far. Makes you wonder what happened to her in singles that she lost so early.
