Roland Garros
Singles – Second Round: (2) Maria Sharapova def. Eugenie Bouchard 6-2 6-4
It took only a few minutes for Maria Sharapova to complete this rain-interrupted match, but she remains far behind Victoria Azarenka in the contest for #2.
Singles – Second Round: (12) Maria Kirilenko def. Ashleigh Barty 6-3 6-1
Maria Kirilenko takes another small step toward the Top Ten. She is the only seed left in her eighth of the draw, so a quarterfinal is a perfectly reasonable possibility.
Singles – Second Round: (13) Marion Bartoli def. Mariana Duque Marino 7-6(7-5) 7-5
This isn’t really much of a win — Mariana Duque Marino likes clay, but she is ranked #162 — but right now probably the biggest thing Marion Bartoli needs is some victories to get herself back on track.
Singles – Second Round: Francesca Schiavone def. (21) Kirsten Flipkens 6-1 4-6 6-3
Kirsten Flipkens loses her chance to clinch a Top Twenty spot, although it now looks very likely. Francesca Schiavone defends her points, which might suffice to keep her Top Fifty, but we probably won’t be sure until after next week’s Challengers.
Singles – Second Round: Stefanie Voegele def. Kaia Kanepi 7-6(8-6) 3-6 8-6
Given how incredibly well Kaia Kanepi has been playing lately, we have to think that this is a case of her finally running out of gas. She will be falling to around #45. Stefanie Voegele is right around #50.
Singles – Third Round: (1) Serena Williams def. (26) Sorana Cirstea 6-0 6-2
And the drumbeat goes on. Serena will probably be safe at #1 even after Wimbledon. She leaves Sorana Cirstea probably #24 or #25.
Singles – Third Round: (4) Agnieszka Radwanska def. Dinah Pfizenmaier 6-3 6-4
Agnieszka Radwanska won’t be going anywhere in the rankings this week, but she is adding points for the first time in a while.
Singles – Third Round: (5) Sara Errani def. (32) Sabine Lisicki 6-0 6-4
Sara Errani continues to be relentless here, but she is still only #7 in safe points. Sabine Lisicki loses her Top 25 chance.
Singles – Third Round: (8) Angelique Kerber def. (29) Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 6-7(3-7) 6-4
Varvara Lepchenko loses her Top 25 spot — she will probably be #27.
Singles – Third Round: (14) Ana Ivanovic def. Virginie Razzano 6-3 6-2
Ana Ivanovic is starting to add points, although she hasn’t moved much yet.
Singles – Third Round: (15) Roberta Vinci def. Petra Cetkovska 6-1 2-6 6-2
And after this Roberta Vinci is supposed to deal with Serena? Because that’s her next task…. The good news is, she will almost certainly rise to at least #13, and very likely higher.
Singles – Third Round: (20) Carla Suarez Navarro def. Monica Puig 6-4 7-5
This for practical purposes clinches Carla Suarez Navarro’s Top Twenty spot. And gives us an interesting fourth round, since Suarez Navarro faces Errani next; they’re two of the more clay-specialized of the top players.
Singles – Third Round: Svetlana Kuznetsova def. Bojana Jovanovski 6-4 7-6(7-2)
Svetlana Kuznetsova has now defended her points, which will keep her Top Forty — right ahead of Jovanovski.
Doubles – First Round: (8) Hsieh/Peng def. Falconi/Jugic-Salkic 7-5 6-2
One more win would make a Top Fifteen spot very likely for Hsieh Su-Wei.
Doubles – First Round: (10) Mladenovic/Voskoboeva def. Torro-Flor/Tsurenko 6-2 7-5
Doubles – First Round: (11) Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova def. Dushevina/Panova 4-6 6-2 6-4
Doubles – First Round: Barthel/Dekmeijere def. (14) Barty/Dellacqua 3-6 6-4 6-3
Doubles – First Round: Cirstea/Morita def. Halep/Rus 7-6(7-2) 6-3
Doubles – First Round: Davis/Moulton-Levy def. Keys/Oudin 6-4 3-6 6-3
Doubles – First Round: Garcia/Johansson def. Beck/Solovyeva 6-1 3-6 6-4
Doubles – Second Round: (3) Petrova/Srebotnik def. Govortsova/Tatishvili 7-5 6-1
Nadia Petrova has a long, long way to go if she is to make it to #1 in doubles, but she keeps her chances alive.
Doubles – Second Round: (4) Makarova/Vesnina def. Bratchikova/Tanasugarn 6-1 6-4
One more win and Makarova/Vesnina will have defended their points. Their Top Ten spots already look pretty secure. We show the Top Ten as follows:
1..(1) ERRANI ………….8455*
1..(1) VINCI …………. 8455*
3..(3) PETROVA ……….. 6895*
4..(4) HLAVACKOVA ………6640*
5..(5) HRADECKA ………..6046*
6..(6) SREBOTNIK ……… 5755*
7..(7) MAKAROVA ………..5280*
8..(9) VESNINA ……….. 4932*
9.(11) RAYMOND ……….. 4775*
10.(12) HUBER …………. 4425
Doubles – Second Round: Jankovic/Lucic-Baroni def. Beltrame/Thorpe 7-5 6-3
Doubles – Second Round: Kudryavtseva/Rodionova def. Castano/Marosi 6-1 6-1
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Black/Qureshi def. (1) Mirza/Lindstedt 6-2 6-3
This is a pretty overwhelming triumph for Mixed rankings, which say that Robert Lindstedt just doesn’t understand Mixed. Under Mixed rankings, Mirza/Lindstedt would have been unseeded — and were below Black/Qureshi. Maybe Sania Mirza needs to check the Mixed rankings before picking a partner.
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Hantuchova/Rojer def. (2) Vesnina/Mirnyi 0-6 6-0 10-6
Here again, the Mixed rankings had a warning: Elena Vesnina is good in Mixed (#1, in fact), but Max Mirnyi isn’t very strong any more; under Mixed, Vesnina/Mirnyi would have been seeded #5.
Mixed Doubles – First Round:(4) Raymond/Soares def. Foretz Gacon/Roger-Vasselin 7-5 6-3
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Hlavackova/Dlouhy def. Peschke/Matkowski 3-6 6-1 10-8
If our first matches were triumphs for Mixed rankings, this is as bad a result for the Mixed rankings as the Black/Qureshi is good — Mixed would have put Peschke/Matkowski at the top of the seed list. Memo to Rafael Nadal: The problem with two- or three-year rankings (such as we perforce use in Mixed) is that they can conceal the fact that a player is in an incredible slump….
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Huber/Melo def. Beltrame/Paire 0-6 7-5 11-9
Liezel Huber really does seem to be in a funk at present — this should not have been so close.
