Roland Garros

Singles – Second Round: (3) R Nadal def. M Klizan 4-6 6-3 6-3 6-3

Rafael Nadal seems to be having a lot more tough matches this year than in the past, and he seems to be very testy about it, but so far, he keeps winning. He leaves Martin Klizan around #35.

Singles – Second Round: (7) R Gasquet def. M Przysiezny 6-3 6-3 6-0

One more win and Richard Gasquet will have defended his points. We haven’t had many upsets yet, so his Top Ten ranking isn’t secure, but he’s getting closer.

Singles – Second Round: (8) J Tipsarevic def. F Verdasco 7-6(7-3) 6-1 3-6 5-7 8-6

It’s not easy to know what to make of this. Is Janko Tipsarevic finally coming out of his funk, or is Fernando Verdasco still struggling? We don’t know, but Verdasco made the third round last year; he is going to fall to around #60.

Singles – Second Round: (9) S Wawrinka def. H Zeballos 6-2 7-6(7-2) 6-4

Stanislas Wawrinka still looks healthy, and given the way he has played this clay season, that could spell a lot of trouble. Horacio Zeballos loses a few points and will fall to right around #50.

Singles – Second Round: (14) T Haas def. J Sock 7-6(7-3) 6-2 7-5

Tommy Haas has now matched his result from last year. He has some distance to go to make the Top Ten, but it’s looking perfectly possible.

Singles – Second Round: (19) J Isner def. R Harrison 5-7 6-7(7-9) 6-3 6-1 8-6

This is pretty much good news and bad news. John Isner survived a five set match on clay, which is pure bonus for him; one more win would likely put him in the Top Twenty. But he’s a day behind the pace, and he has to face Tommy Haas next after battling through this marathon.

Singles – Second Round: (21) J Janowicz def. R Haase 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-3

Jerzy Janowicz is now about 150 points from the Top Twenty.

Singles – Second Round: (29) M Youzhny def. F Delbonis 6-3 6-7(5-7) 7-5 6-4

Mikhail Youzhny defends his points, but it’s not yet certain whether he will be Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: N Davydenko def. D Istomin 6-4 7-5 6-2

Denis Istomin benefitted from whatever Florian Mayer’s problem was in the first round, but he still isn’t comfortable on clay. He’ll remain just below #40. Just a few points behind Nikolay Davydenko, in fact.

Singles – Third Round: (2) R Federer def. (30) J Benneteau 6-3 6-4 7-5

We’ve had a lot of matches here that we can’t say much about — a point even Roger Federer admitted when he wondered if having 32 seeds was a good idea. The big news for Federer, if such it can be called, is that he gains revenge — and leaves Julien Benneteau still below the Top Thirty.

Singles – Third Round: (4) D Ferrer def. F Lopez 6-1 7-5 6-4

Feliciano Lopez should be Top Forty, but by a very thin margin. David Ferrer keeps alive the faint possibility that he will rise to #3, or at least #4. Especially if Nadal keeps struggling.

Singles – Third Round: (6) J Tsonga def. (25) J Chardy 6-1 6-2 7-5

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga gets the “First Frenchman in the Fourth Round” award, but he still needs one more win to defend his points, and more than that to rise in the rankings. He leaves Jeremy Chardy still between #25 and #30.

Singles – Third Round: V Troicki def. (10) M Cilic 7-6(14-12) 6-4 7-5

It really does seem as if Viktor Troicki is finally out of his slump. He’s back in the Top Fifty — and he badly damages Marin Cilic’s Top Ten hopes. Cilic might still make it, but only if Stanislas Wawrinka loses his next match.

Singles – Third Round: (11) N Almagro def. (20) A Seppi 7-6(7-1) 6-0 6-4

One more win and Nicolas Almagro should be able to stay Top Fifteen. But Andreas Seppi, who made the fourth round last year, is out of the Top 25.

Singles – Third Round: (23) K Anderson def. (14) M Raonic 7-5 7-6(7-4) 6-3

Kevin Anderson has truly had an impressive clay season. This should assure his Top 25 spot, while leaving Milos Raonic’s Top Fifteen spot up in the air.

Singles – Third Round: (15) G Simon def. (18) S Querrey 2-6 6-3 2-6 7-6(7-2) 6-2

Even with the loss, it was the best Roland Garros run of Sam Querrey’s career, and clinches his Top Twenty spot. Gilles Simon will likely rise to #17, but he needs to beat Roger Federer to go any higher — and Federer is obviously much more rested.

Singles – Third Round: (32) T Robredo def. G Monfils 2-6 6-7(5-7) 6-2 7-6(7-3) 6-2

Gael Monfils was doing his usual job of scrambling and thrashing, and against a patient player like Tommy Robredo, that isn’t a great answer. Monfils was getting massaged on the changeovers in the fifth set, and he really looked out of gas at the end. Tommy Robredo is now very close to the Top Thirty; win one more and he’s in.

Doubles – First Round: (6) Qureshi/Rojer def. Donskoy/Tursunov 6-3 7-6(7-1)

Qureshi/Rojer have enough to defend that they will probably need more to stay Top Ten, but it’s a start.

Doubles – First Round: Cuevas/Zeballos def. Berlocq/L Mayer 2-6 6-3 6-1

Pablo Cuevas’s singles comeback looked mildly promising, but no more; this looks rather more promising.

Doubles – First Round: Gicquel/Roger-Vasselin def. Brands/Moser 3-6 6-3 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Llodra/Mahut def. Kowalczyk/Rosol 6-3 6-3

Doubles – Second Round: Dasnieres de Veigy/Serra def. (3) Lindstedt/Nestor 7-6(7-4) 6-3

Daniel Nestor hasn’t looked very good this year, but this is hard to believe. Losing to a good team is one thing, but losing to a pair of nobodies? And Nestor was last year’s champion. He will fall from #8 to somewhere below the Top Twenty. Robert Lindstedt falls from #3 to no better than #5. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) Bryan………….11220

1..(1) Bryan………….11220

3..(4) Lopez…………..5270

4..(5) Granollers………5270

5..(3) Lindstedt……….5260

6..(6) Bhupathi………..4920

7..(7) Tecau…………..4890

8.(11) Bopanna…………4715

9.(13) Soares………….4280

10..(9) Qureshi…………4220

Doubles – Second Round: (16) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski def. Begemann/Emmrich 6-0 6-2

At last, Fyrstenberg/Matkowski are showing some life. But the clay season is almost over, and they tend not to do well in the weeks after that. So they may still fall lower this year.

Doubles – Second Round: Bautista Agut/Gimeno-Traver def. Erlich/A Ram 7-5 3-6 6-3

Doubles – Second Round: Cabal/Farah def. Murray/Peers 3-6 6-4 6-4

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Black/Qureshi def. (1) Mirza/Lindstedt 6-2 6-3

This is a pretty overwhelming triumph for Mixed rankings, which say that Robert Lindstedt just doesn’t understand Mixed. Under Mixed rankings, Mirza/Lindstedt would have been unseeded — and were below Black/Qureshi. Maybe Sania Mirza needs to check the Mixed rankings before picking a partner.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Hantuchova/Rojer def. (2) Vesnina/Mirnyi 0-6 6-0 10-6

Here again, the Mixed rankings had a warning: Elena Vesnina is good in Mixed (#1, in fact), but Max Mirnyi isn’t very strong any more; under Mixed, Vesnina/Mirnyi would have been seeded #5.

Mixed Doubles – First Round:(4) Raymond/Soares def. Foretz Gacon/Roger-Vasselin 7-5 6-3

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Hlavackova/Dlouhy def. Peschke/Matkowski 3-6 6-1 10-8

If our first matches were triumphs for Mixed rankings, this is as bad a result for the Mixed rankings as the Black/Qureshi is good — Mixed would have put Peschke/Matkowski at the top of the seed list. Memo to Rafael Nadal: The problem with two- or three-year rankings (such as we perforce use in Mixed) is that they can conceal the fact that a player is in an incredible slump….

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Huber/Melo def. Beltrame/Paire 0-6 7-5 11-9

Liezel Huber really does seem to be in a funk at present — this should not have been so close.
