Twelve-year-old Australian tennis ace, Rinky Hijikata, is setting his sights on victory at the Longines Future Tennis Aces tournament this week in Paris.
Selected by Tennis Australia this month, Hijikata, from Epping in New South Wales, is preparing to take part in this once-in-a-lifetime tournament during the French Open.
Since arriving at the weekend, Hijikata has been busy training with coach Ben Pyne to ensure he is ready to take on 15 of the world’s best U13’s.
“I’m truly excited to be playing at the Longines Future Tennis Aces tournament, against the world’s best boys in my age group. I’m ready for the challenge and am looking forward to the first day of competition,” said Hijikata.
The first day of play takes place today against the magical backdrop of the Hotel de Ville where Rinky will step onto the court to begin his journey.
“Having seen the other boys train this week I know competition will be tough, but that’s what makes this such an exciting opportunity for me.
“I have been given the chance to play against some of the best juniors in my age group and fully intend on making this a memorable experience.”
Tennis Australia’s Developmental Tennis Manager and 2005 Australian Open mixed doubles champion, Scott Draper said “To compete in Paris, during an event such as the French Open, will be a great challenge for Rinky.
“He’s had solid preparation leading into the tournament, having competed in Slovenia over the last couple of weeks and will look to bring some form into his first match on Thursday.
“We hope he enjoys the contest and soaks up the experience,” added Draper.
The lucky winner of the tournament will meet Fabrice Santoro for an invitational match during the final on Saturday, and the two finalists will receive full funding from Longines for their sporting equipment until their 16th birthdays.
The Longines Future Tennis Aces event, now in its fourth year, continues Longines’ commitment and support of young athletes in their pursuit of sporting excellence.
