Roland Garros
Rafael Nadal lost his first set of the French Open fortnight but quickly recovered for a 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-3 defeat of German Daniel Brands as the third seed began the quest for an eighth French Open title on Monday. Nadal has won seven of the last eight editions at Roland Garros, with Roger Federer picking up the slack by lifting the trophy in 2009.
Heavy-hitting Brands gave the third seed a fight, earning the opening set in a surprise as Nadal double-faulted to drop serve and trail 4-5, One game later, Brands took the early lead. But Nadal clawed it all back after a leisurely three hours.
“He played his game right to the hilt, all the balls, all his service games, he was just firing on all cylinders. It was a fantastic tactic, but he couldn’t quite execute it. ”
“I was trying to find solutions in every moment,” said Nadal, who added that he was not frustrated by the go-for-broke tactics of his opponent. “I had my mind under control all the time, fighting for the next point every time.
Other seeds had it easier on a sunny day in Paris, with No.6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beating Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 and fellow French seventh seed Richard Gasquet defeating Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-1, 6-4, 6-3. Spain’s No. 11 made a comeback over Austrian qualifier Andreas Heider-Maurer 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Also out: Austria’s 2011 semi-finalist Juergen Melzer, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 against Dutchman Igor Sijsling.
Japan’s Kei Nishikori, the No.13, made light work of Canada’s Jesse Levine 6-3, 6-2, 6-0, coming back from an early break and dominating after that. Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios made a big-time Grand Slam debut with a defeat of Czech veteran Stepanek, almost twice his age, 7-6(4), 7-6(8), 7-6(11). The Australian Open junior champion got in on a wildcard following a withdrawal and made the most of his chance. “(Winning) felt about ten times better than the championship point at the junior Australian Open,” said Kyrgios.,
He next faces Croatian tenth seed Marin Cilic, who beat Germany’s Philipp Petzschner in a 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 win.
