The sight of Piotr Wozniacki crouched in front of his daughter Caroline’s courtside chair, delivering one of his verbose coaching sermons in Polish is the staple diet of those who love to make humor of tennis matters. But the routine could soon be obsolete as Wozniacki Sr. now feels it is time to take a back step from tennis, take time away from the circuit and employ an experienced coach to take over the job.
Of course the Wozniacki’s have been there before and last year both Ricardo Sanchez and Thomas Johansson were hired and fired in pretty quick time as it became clear Piotr still wanted to maintain control on the situation.
But now the former professional footballer insists it is time for him to get back to home life and more relaxing pursuits such as fishing.
Piotr told Denmark’s national broadcasting service, DR: “We have a couple of advisors who help us with, but they also have other responsibilities. This will change soon. The aim is that one of the will be Caroline’s full time coach, and it’s just a question of whom we trust the most.
“What happened last year didn’t change anything with the fact that we wanted a fundamental change. I need to get away from this circus, so I can stay home, watch the matches on TV, and only go to a few tournaments, while another coach directs the work with Caroline. We’ve found the pieces, now we just have to make them fit.”
Meantime Caroline, who broke a five match losing run by beating Britain’s Laura Robson in the French Open first round, maintains finding the right coach will not be easy.
Wozniacki and Robson share the same conundrum of trying to find a a coach that will improve their game and be a compatible work mate. “It’s very difficult to find someone who works great with me or with Laura or with someone who knows what they want out there,”said the former world no.1. “Because we know what we want.
“We know we can improve all the time and play better. And it’s important to find the balance between someone who is really good and can push you on the court but also lets you live your life off the court.
“Because as a professional you know what’s best for you and when you’re on the court it’s one thing, but when you’re off the court you kind of just want to do your own thing. I think it’s difficult to find someone who doesn’t want to just go in and try to control everything.”
