The troubles continued for top seed Marion Bartoli as the Frenchwoman lost her opening match to Italy’s Camila Giorgi 6-3, 6-2. Bartoli heads to Paris with a 2-4 record on the clay and low confidence as she tries to get comfortable again with her father as her coach.
Wild card Virginie Razzano extended the loss streak of second seed Tamira Paszek to nine matches dating to the first of the season in Australia with a 6-1, 6-4 win over the Austrian. Third seed Alizé Cornet of France led the way over compatriot Mathilde Johansson 6-3, 6-2. There were also wins for fourth seed Hsieh Su-Wei, a doubles champion last weekend in Rome, who beat German teenager Annika Beck 6-7(6), 7-5, 6-1, – saving two match points – and fifth seed Monica Niculescu, a winner over luckless Kiwi Marina Erakovic 6-7(7), 6-3, 7-6(5).
Lauren Davis won an all-American battle with Christina McHale, the sixth seed, 7-5, 6-3 while seventh seeded South African Chanelle Scheepers put out Claire Feuerstein of France 7-5, 6-4. María-Teresa Torró-Flor of Spain upset eighth seed Daniela Hantuchova 6-3, 4-6 7-6(4). Swede Johanna Larsson rounded out a full day’s play with a win against Petra Cetkovska 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 while Anna Tatishvili stopped French wild card Caroline Garcia 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-4.
Organizers completed the entire first round in a single day as Japan’s Misaki Doi beat Czech Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 6-2, Canadian Eugenie Bouchard defeated Sílvia Soler-Espinosa 6-3, 6-3 and Lucie Hradecka stopped Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain 6-4, 6-3. There were also wins for three qualifiers: Flavia Pennetta, American Shelby Rogers and Poland’s Magda Linette.
One main draw match was started before a second day of rain forced cancellation of the day’s program. Sloane Stephens stood level with Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3, 2-6, 2-2..
