Rome
Briton Elena Baltacha made a comeback from injury by winning her first WTA match since the Wimbledon first round last summer, beating Swiss Stefanie Voegele 7-6(9) 7-5 in two hours. It was just the latest setback for the alpine nation since Sunday, when Roger Federer lost the Rome final to Rafael Nadal and the national ice hockey team was beaten in the final of the World Championships in Helsinki by Sweden.
Seventh seed Varvara Lepchenko of the US kept up a nonstop clay schedule which has seen her compete in Portugal, Madrid and Rome over the past month, with the American reaching the second round at the expense of Serb Bojana Jovanovski 6-2, 6-7(8), 6-4.
In other results in the chilly Belgian capital, Slovak Jana Cepelova defeated Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 while Olga Govortsova of Belarus advanced over Arantxa Rus 6-2 7-5. The 86th-ranked Dutchwoman has gone 0-7 in WTA-level matches this season.
