Tennis fans around the world will be focusing their attention on Paris as the countdown to Roland Garros brings excitement and enthusiasm to the city; and those fortunate enough to witness the matches first hand sometimes book nearby Paris hotels in upscale neighborhoods for a legendary experience.

This year’s French Open runs May 21 through June 9, and is expected to bring hundreds of thousands of spectators to witness 15 days of matches and participate in the variety of entertainment that surrounds the event. Providing travelers with an opportunity to take in exceptional tennis and enjoy the breathtaking beauty of Paris, the five-star accommodations of the Paris Marriott Hotel Champs Elysees are just four miles from the stadium with private and public transportation readily available.

While originally reserved for members of French clubs, tennis in Paris was first held in 1891 on the courts of Stade Francais Club. Women’s singles were added six years later and it was not until 1925 that the French Tennis Federation created the French Internationals by opening the event to foreign players, alternately hosting the event at Stade Francais and the Racing Club de France until the Roland Garros stadium was completed in 1928.

A donation by Stade Francais of three hectares of land near Porte d’Auteuil to the French Tennis Federation made it possible to construct a new stadium. The stadium was named after the historic clubs’ famed Roland Garros, a beloved member and aviation pioneer who had died 10 years earlier. Roland-Garros is most remembered for his Sept. 23, 1913 flight over the Mediterranean.

Following a six-year lapse during World War II, Roland Garros emerged into a Golden Era during post-war years as tennis grew immensely in popularity.

The Paris Marriott Hotel Champs-Elysees is the only five-star located directly on the world renowned Paris avenue, where stylish shops, cinemas, theaters, fine restaurants and chestnut trees offer an exquisite look at upscale Paris lifestyles.
