It’s January 16,2013. Gertrude Augusta Moran of Santa Monica , California has gone to the big grass tennis court in the sky. Most of her life she was known as Gussy Moran. Most misspell it as Gussie but she always preferred Gussy with the “y”. Many friends called her Gus. She was a dear woman. Brilliant. Witty. Charming . Elegant . Complicated. Independent.and Indigent. Yes. Indigent. She had a roof over her head but she lived very simply. There was never any extra money. It’s sad … ( its like when we adopt orphans from foreign lands when we have so many at home that are in need of love and attention )
Gus grew up in Santa Monica. Her family home is preserved as a treasure. …. As a society we preserve her house ? But as a society we should be ashamed. We cared more about an old wooden structure than an old wonderful champion. Gussy the person was treated like a used old tennis ball……..
We here at 10sballs.com just lost one of our truly dear friends of the site. Gussy loved to read ” Loveys Lobs” as well as Anything written by Jack Neworth. Gussy loved the LATC. She loved tennis. Gus made a small appearance in the” Pat and Mike” film with Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracey. She had a full and wonderful life. She played during the last Golden Age of tennis.
In 1949 there was hardly a male on the planet that didn’t know of “Gorgeous Gussy Moran ” even though the dictionary won’t credit her with the expression “gussied up ” we all know it started to be used as slang in the vocabulary the following year !
Gussy never wanted to be a poster child for a women’s retroactive retirement program. But we need one. Gussy help pioneer professional women’s tennis. The WTA ladies are the highest paid female athletes on the planet.
Services will be later in the month at The Los Angeles Tennis Club.
Gussy was the forerunner of sexy female athlete. She will never be forgotten. Gussy is in the Hall of Fame as well as having lace panties ( knickers ) in most of the tennis museums around the world. Including the words best tennis museum. Which is the Wimbledon museum.
Gussy had a full wonderful life. Anyone that was ever lucky enough to be ” on the list ” meant you got the most amazing letters from Gussy. She never missed a detail. Handwritten ever so perfectly.
This is hard for us to write as she was such a treasured friend of ours. She loved the modern game. She loved the modern players. She wished she could have tried all the new equipment. She loved life. The beaches of the world. Cats big and small. She loved a good looking man ( especially Pat di
Cicco ) She had a few husbands. She loved an occasional martini…( boy did she look elegant sipping them ) She hated the new huge stadiums and over the top arenas . She loved Jimmy Connors ,Pancho Gonzales,Pancho
Segura. Gardener Mulloy , Lew Hoad , Charlie Chaplin ,and the great Bill Tilden. Gussie was eccentric and very eclectic in her wide interests. She was an avid reader going thru books by the dozen. She had an almost photographic memory. She was truly a great lover of life even when the world wasn’t always good to her. She had what you might call a “sunny disposition”
It’s absolutely a must that the WTA establishes a fund so that our great champions like Althea Gibson and Gussy Moran don’t have to worry about whether to use their small monthly checks for food or medicine ?
