While we are awaiting our British invasion I’m going to keep going till they shut me down. I’d say writing…but it’s hardly that. As we all know most tennis players aren’t the most literate people in the world…not that we are not really smart, we are. On the court we have learned to figure things out ourselves. My point is…how will our colleagues take to our California slang…it’s gonna be fun. We can’t wait.
Great day. My case of autographed Ben Press’s books arrived. Great labor of love. Title is really long…Ready? “100 Years of Tennis at the Hotel Del Coronado Playground of the Stars,” whew! It’s a great Christmas gift for any tennis fan. Order from Benpress.com. He mentions Dinah Shore on page 145. I did say it’s funny how she is far more known for her golf event and the wild party weekend that it has evolved into…Ben calls Dinah a” celebrity’s celebrity.” So well liked by all.
I love the Bob Lutz forehand and I forgot how great his returns were—there’s a photo of it in Ben’s book. Hey Bob, belated, thanks for doing our Open Tennis Radio Show. You are a great guy to have in our sport. You’d make a world-class coach. Wake up someone who wants to fill a trophy case…
A big shout out to 10sballs.com Karen Anderson. She had a great USTA team season and last week played at the nationals in Tucson…Chased Agassi down at airport. Hmm. He gave autographs. They all said he was really nice and gave them advice…but they lost…
Our Fashionista is super busy but still finds time to play in two leagues. Energizer bunny…
Saved the best for last. Now more treasures from Ben’s book. Gussy Moran. Page 105. Gussie or Gussy. Yes the one and only.
Gussie update: she is really doing great. She has a sharp mind a great wit and sense of humor. She is a walking tennis historian as well as a walking piece of tennis history. The Brits would call her a living legend. She is all of that and more. Fit. Dresses great. Really youthful. Moves like the agile older athlete that she is. She is witty…charming and still loves tennis, fashion…and Kobe Bryant. Yes we are hoping to get her to join up with this Gang (need one more yank).
It was 1949 and Gussy Moran wore lace trim on her tennis panties (knickers) at Wimbledon. Caused an international stir. Ben Press refers to Gussy this way, “Gussy did for tennis what Anna Kournikova has done for tennis in recent years. The panties are a long story…Gussy like Anna was a great player.”
Now gotta close with a tennis God. This would be my all time favorite after Roger…. Page 48. With a great photo of Ali McGraw, Dino Martin, and Pancho Gonzalez, from the film ” Players,” how does a 45 year old beat a 25 year old at…Wimbledon? 1969 first round match with final score: 22-24, 1–6, 16-14, 6–3, 11-9. Pancho Gonzalez. TENNIS GOD…
