New Haven

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2/WC) Petra Kvitova def. (8) Lucie Safarova 6-3 6-3

If you look at today’s Feature, on quality points, you’ll find Petra Kvitova at #5. Only #5, but well ahead of #6. She’s starting to earn good wins again. As this demonstrates. She won’t move above #5 this week (and we’d guess she won’t be moving at the U. S. Open, either), but she might have a chance to make some noise. She leaves Lucie Safarova probably at #17, which is where she came in.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) Caroline Wozniacki def. (6) Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 6-1

Not slump nor schedule nor even injury of knee can stop Caroline Wozniacki at New Haven. She hurt herself early in the second set, but it clearly didn’t interfere with her results. She still needs one more win to keep the #8 ranking, though.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) Sara Errani def. (5) Marion Bartoli 6-4 6-2

This was closer — or at least a lot slower — than you would think from the score, but the final result is to widen the gap between #10 Errani and #11 Bartoli. These points might be significant for Errani after the U. S. Open.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (7) Maria Kirilenko def. (Q) Olga Govortsova 6-1 6-2

Maria Kirilenko is looking very lucky this week. She didn’t have to face Agnieszka Radwanska in this match; Radwanska was injured. And her next match is against Caroline Wozniacki, who is also injured. If Kirilenko can take advantage of that opportunity in the semifinal, she’ll rise to #12.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Srebotnik/Zheng def. Klepac/Rosolska 6-3 7-5

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Lee-Waters/Moulton-Levy def. (4) Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez 7-6(10-8) 6-1

Dallas

Singles – Semifinal: (2) Jelena Jankovic def. (Q) Casey Dellacqua 7-5 6-4

It’s a little late (really, a lot late) for Jelena Jankovic to be coming to life, but better late…. We show her back up to #27. And she is the top seed in the final, although not the top-ranked player. Interestingly, this small event saw the top two players in the field make the final, which didn’t happen in New Haven.

Singles – Semifinal: (3) Roberta Vinci def. (WC) Bojana Jovanovski 6-0 6-0

Bojana Jovanovski had been very lucky to this point, with seeds falling out of the way due to injury. Once she met an actual healthy seed… ouch. It appears Roberta Vinci will be climbing to #20. And she is the top player in the final….

Doubles – Semifinal: (4) Erakovic/Watson def. (1) Benesova/Zahlavova Strycova 6-7(5-7) 6-4 10-7 (Match TB)

This really is proving a tough year for Benesova/Zahlavova Strycova. We can’t give you a clue as to why.
