Agnieszka Radwanska, the world 11th ranked player from Poland, has hit her last competitive ball of 2010 and fears she might not be ready to contest January’s Australian Open after suffering a stress fracture to her foot.
The 21 year-old from Krakow has been playing hurt for several weeks and was forced to retire from her quarter final as she trailed 5-0 in the first set against close friend Caroline Wozniacki in last week’s Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.
She then attempted to play this week’s China Open in Beijing but lost out to unseeded German Angelique Kerber.
After consulting with WTA Tour medical staff, Radwanska admitted: “I’m done for this year with a very serious injury, a stress fracture. It’s a complicated injury and there’s some chance it won’t be healed in time for Australia.
“I just realized how serious the injury was just before I came to Asia to play in Tokyo and Beijing.”
Radwanska maintained she was not sure where she picked up the injury but now has to face the disappointment of not finishing in the world’s top ten for the first time in three years.
“I’m probably not going to make a top 10 finish as I won’t be playing the in last two tournaments of the year and the other girls are playing well,” she added. “It’s been a good year and I think I should finish in the top 15.”
