*Surpries Not Only at Indian Wells*

15 March 2012

There is lots of anticipation for the end of the BNP Paribas Open; with Djokovic, Almagro, Isner, and Simon left for the Men’s Singles side, ideas for who can take the gold could seem slightly obvious, but then again, this tournament has presented many surprises along the way! Who thought Murray would leave so early? – It was such a shame.

As for the Women’s Singles side: who knew Li Na would be out without a taste of the semifinals?! Now we find Azarenka again in the final battle for the gold, and it still could be that Kerber takes this one. Who knows? Indian Wells has brought exhilirating matches, and out top writers are sticking around until the very last minute, so we hope you enjoy.

Thursday March 15th Order of Play Preview

Indian Wells, CA – The semifinals are just around the corner as the WTA and ATP headliners take to the court in quarterfinal match ups today. Up first on Stadium 1 is Marion Bartoli vs Ana Ivanovic. Bartoli, the #7 seed, had a hiccup in her opening round match, but has cruised in her latest two rounds. Ivanovic comes off of a statement win over Caroline Wozniacki in the round of 16 and looks to return to her championship form that won her this title in 2008.

Following that match, look for world #1 Novak Djokovic against Spaniard Nicolas Almagro. Djokovic was forced to work hard for his quarterfinal berth yesterday against Pablo Andujar, and the Serb looks to improve on his performance against a different Spaniard today. [READ MORE].

Del Potro Drama in the Desert

Indian Wells, CA – Juan Martin Del Potro faced considerable opposition from Denis Istomin in his 7-6(2), 6-7(6), victory in a 2 hour and 44minute match that finished at 11:37pm pst. Up a break and seemingly cruising, Istomin awoke and battled back, frustrating the big Argentine with his defense and ball movement. The Argentine gave up his break lead and was forced to play a tiebreaker for the first set. He won it 7-2 courtesy to Istomin errors but the conditions on Stadium 1 suddenly became windy, and the blustering wind made play difficult for both players. Del Potro struggled heavily in his 3-3 service game but managed to save all 4 break points he faced. He was under pressure again a game later at 4-4 and this time Istomin broke on his fifth chance. More drama arose as Istomin had three set points in a row serving for the set. He lost them and his service game before both players then held to enter another tiebreak. [READ MORE].
