It will require a pair of do-or-die performances from the Williams sisters if the ageing pair of former champions want to be included for one last hurrah on the Olympic team headed for London 2012. The pair left it late, by returning to Fed Cup play for the first time in five years to qualify for the chance at inclusion on the Games squad.

But the stereotypical Williams bravado is truly in place for the sister act, which treats tennis as a part-time interest at best. Serena Williams seems to have suffered no effects after her fourth round Australian Open loss. Venus insists she is fit again as she deals with a fatigue illness which has kept her from the court since the US Open five months ago.

“We played on the same team a few times, we always have a blast,” said Serena. “We always make the best of everything. We really enjoy every moment together, it’s something that we really enjoy.”

Williams said she has been training after exiting Melbourne to Ekaterina Makarova. “I hit some balls. I trained a little bit.” Included on the US team are also Christina McHale, Liezel Huber and Sloane Stephens.

The US faces Belarus, a nation boosted in confidence at the Australian Open title of Victoria Azarenka, the new WTA No. 1.
