Kim Clijsters has counseled Caroline Wozniacki to hold to her steady, logical career course if she wants to eventually earn back the No. 1 ranking she lost through a defeat at the hands of the Belgian in the Australian Open quarter-finals.

Defending champion Clijsters reminded her that it took her two years to lift her first major honor (2005 US Open) after taking over the WTA top spot. “She’s worked very hard to get to where she is, and she’s one of “the” most consistent players,” said the Belgian, aged 28. “People are almost in a way almost blaming her for it. I think that’s something that is really absurd.”

Four-time major winner Clijsters called the 21-year-old Dane “great for the game, great for our sport.”

“She has really good people around her who tell her to not listen to all that stuff that’s being said in the media room or around her. She’s good enough. It’s just taken a couple of years – she will definitely get there.”

Clijsters called the younger star “a fighter” and said that Wozniacki plays hugely consistent.

“You have to be an aggressive player if you want to beat her. If you’re not going to go for winners and are not playing at your highest level, then she will just rally you until you just make mistakes. That’s what makes her so good.

“I know when I go out against Caroline, that I have to be on top of my game, that I have to step out and play aggressively.”
