Murray will see Better Days—Nathan’s Notice  |

By: Nathan M. Cuny

At one time both Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic played in the shadows of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. During 2011 Novak Djokovic stepped out of their shadows and shed his own light on the old rivalry. Andy Murray remains overshadowed by Nadal and Federer, and is newly shadowed by the once unexpected power and confidence of Djokovic. Not to say Murray is a mediocre player, but what will it take for Murray who has consistently played well and maintained a near constant place at No.4 to hold a higher position?  Some say Coach Ivan Lendl will make Murray a Grand Slam champion and possibly pas the highest ranking he has attained as No.2 in 2009.

Lendl may just be Murray’s best bet in finally winning a Grand Slam. Lendl was offered coaching jobs 10 times over the last 18 months but refused them all only willing to come out of retirement for Andy Murray. As an eight-time Grand Slam winner Lendl hopes to turn around Murray’s prospects who has  lost in three Grand Slam finals—the most recent being 2011’s Australian Open. Lendl is sure he can make Murray a winner, stating, “I see a guy who wants to win, a guy who wants to work hard. Obviously I see the parallels between his career and my career and I want his career to end up like mine.”

In 2011’s Australian Open final Andy Murray lost every set to Djokovic, Murray has never won a single set in any of the three Grand Slam finals he has played in. Lendl much like Murray lost four Grand Slam finals before finally winning the French Open in 1984. Murray currently is the same age, 24, as Lendl was when he finally won his first Slam. Lendl truly believes Murray can turn his career around much as he did, going on to win a total of 8 grand slams by the end of his 16 year career. Hopefully Lendl will bring the best out of Murray’s extreme dedication to his fitness and the game, training Murray to assert himself when the game gets tough rather than bobbing and weaving.

Murray plays 19-year-old American, Ryan Harrison, currently ranked No. 84 for his first match of the Australian Open. Harrison echoes Murray with his passionate and determined on-court playing style which may prove dangerous for Murray. With regards to this year’s Australian Open Murray is sure he will do better, stating, “Yeah, I don’t normally think too much about the past. Just always try and concentrate on what’s in front of you, [and] what you’re trying to achieve this year. If I get myself in [the final] this time around, I’ll do things a bit differently.” Murray will either play Xavier Malisse or Edouard Roger-Vasselin following his match against Ryan Harrison.
