TOMIC FACES FISH IN FINAL
American MARDY FISH will meet Australian No. 1 BERNARD TOMIC in tomorrow’s final of the 2012 AAMI Classic after he beat Austrian JURGEN MELZER 6/2 4/6 6/1 in the first match of the day.
Fish was pleased with his preparation for the Australian Open: “You can’t duplicate these types of settings – a proper match with the crowds, TV and umpires and ball kids”.
When asked aboutTomic, he said “I’ve played him three times now. He’s got a great feel for the game. He’s got all the shots. He’s awkward to play. He’s only going to get better, more confident. He’s a big kid first of all. He doesn’t look 19, at least body-type wise. His body is not a 19 year old’s normal body. That’s why he’s able to go deep in Grand Slams and play three or five set match after match. He’s got a bright future that’s for sure”.
Fish will prove a formidable opponent for Tomic as he has been working on improving many aspects of his game and life in general. “I show up for every match now. I want to win every single match I step on the court” he said in his after-match interview.
Scot ANDY MURRAY had a solid 6/3 7/6 (8) win over DAVID NALBANDIAN (ARG) in the special exhibition match, helping his Australian Open preparation.
In other matches played today, American SAM QUERREY defeated Serbian VIKTOR TROICKI 6/3 6/3 and Japanese KEI NISHIKORI was too good for ANDY RODDICK 6/3 6/3.
Tomorrow’s schedule of play is attached. GAEL MONFILS (FRA) takes on JURGEN MELZER (AUT) in the first match at 1.00 pm followed by the final.
Legends PAT CASH (AUS) and HENRI LECONTE (FRA) will provide a light-hearted finish to the day’s proceedings.
