Top seeded Caroline Wozniacki is battling to regain 100% fitness in time for the Australian Open that starts in just four days time. The 21 year-old Dane is suffering from a left wrist injury suffered in this week’s Apia International in Sydney.
Wozniacki could this week be unseated by Petra Kvitova from the position at the top of the WTA rankings she has occupied since February 21 last week. But she is more concerned about her chances of doing well at the first major of 2012 and said: “I hope it’s not serious.”
Strapping had to be applied to a tearful Wozniacki’s wrist by Carole Doherty, the WTA’s Senior Director of Sports Science and Medicine in the final set of the no.1’s quarter-final demise in Sydney against close friend Agnieszka Radwanska.
She was due to undergo more examinations on arrival in Melbourne and said:” Hopefully it’s ok. Let’s just hope for the best.
“I could feel it today, especially in the third set. I started feeling it more and more during the match.”
With tenth seeded Andrea Petkovic (stress fracture in back) and Venus Williams (lack of fitness following diagnosis of Sjogren’s Syndrome) already a certain non-starters at Melbourne Park, Wozniacki joins a growing list of leading players with suspect fitness going into the Australian Open.
Defending champion Kim Clijsters is understood to be making good progress in recovering from the painful hip she suffered last week in Brisbane but former champion Maria Sharapova has not played in a tournament since hurting an ankle in Tokyo nearly three months ago and Serena Williams pulled out of last week’ Brisbane International after injuring an ankle. Back problems afflicted Sabine Lisicki and caused the German to pull out in Auckland.
