Interviews with Caroline Wozniacki  |

6th January 2012

Caroline you already said on Twitter you were pretty happy with your performance today – can you talk about what it felt like out there for you?

Yeah I worked on some things yesterday because I didn’t feel like I was playing my best tennis, the two first matches. I worked on some things yesterday that I wanted to improve. I feel like we both played some good tennis out there today and it could have gone either way. I’m pleased about getting these matches before Sydney and of course before the Australian Open. You know I feeling like my form is starting to go up and I always play better when I get a few matches under my belt. I’m pretty pleased.

What do you think are the differences though because you’re saying you both played very well?

Yeah I mean in the beginning in the first set I had tough time returning her serves. I had to get used to that lefty serve and going the other way. You know if I would have returned like I did in the second and the third set maybe it would have gone another way, but at the same time I had my chances and the third set had some 30 – 0 and 40 – 0 games and I didn’t take them. Again, it was a good match and we both played well and Petra played well in the main points as well.

Caroline, Petra is the world number two, she’s coming at you. There’s been a lot of talk about her taking your crown – what are your thoughts on that? Any pressure at all?

No, you know I’ve been number one, finished in the year number one twice in a row already and that’s a great achievement. Very few people have ever done that. You know I’m just enjoying my tennis and just enjoying that I’m playing well. When you’re out there and on court it’s a pleasure. I have a lot of fans following me and supporting and that’s great.  I like winning matches and I’m really excited for New Year to start. Actually that’s the main thing; just keep focused and try to win as many matches and as many tournaments as possible.

The last couple of years or so you’ve played more tournaments than most other top players – are you going to keep the same schedule this year?

I don’t think I have. I think Bartoli has played way more, Schiavone has played more, I think I’ve played maybe one more than Petra or one more than some of the others. I mean we’ve played similar schedules. I mean I’ve played more matches because I’ve won more matches, so you know obviously I hope that I’ll do that again this year. Our schedules are pretty much set already at the beginning of the year. We don’t have too much flexibility because we have so many mandatory tournaments that we have to play. So you add one, two events here or there and that’s pretty much it.

Do you know if your presence here at the Hopman Cup has created any more interest at tennis at home?

Well I don’t know, I mean I think already the interest in tennis back home is very big. But I think it’s been great for Frederik as well to get these matches to show that he can actually compete with some of the top guys. He’s been doing really well. I think today’s is a tough task for him and it’s because Berdych is just playing too good and he has a really big serve. I mean the two first matches he showed great skills and we had fun at the mixed doubles and played well there as well.

The date change for the Copenhagen tournament – is that good for you or does it not make a difference?

Um I don’t think it makes a big difference, but I think it’s good for me and it’s straight after Miami, no its one week after Miami, so there’s a week in between after Charleston. I think its fine.

Better than just before Wimbledon?

To be honest it doesn’t really matter for me. I just play and I always enjoy playing at home, which is always a great tournament.

Can you relax when you do that or are you more tense because you’re playing in front of your own crowd?

Um the first year I was there I was a bit nervous the first couple of matches, but now I’ve just learnt to enjoy it. I know how it is to play against the home crowd favourite, so I know how tough it can be as well when everyone is cheering for you. So I just take it has a positive thing and I just really enjoy playing at home.

How do you think you’re placed for the Australian Open? Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova both have little injuries. Where do you think you are?

I think I’m fine. I’m hitting the ball pretty well and I still have just over a week before the Australian Open starts, so I’m just looking forward to it.

Speaking of Danish players Malou is here. Was she here in case you didn’t make it on time?

Yeah she was here in the first match just in case my flight was delayed or something and I wouldn’t be able to make it, she would have stepped in for the first match. But everything turned out well. I mean for flying in just before my match I thought I played ok. I played pretty well.
