Former Pepperdine All-American Bassam Beidas rallied to beat Serbian qualifier Nikola Bubnic, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, in one of six first-round singles matches completed Tuesday on the first day of main-draw play at the 16th annual Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center USTA Pro Classic at the Claremont Club.

The second-seeded Beidas, a four-year starter for the Waves whose eligibility ended after the 2009-10 school year, is representing the country of Lebanon. The former WCC freshman of the year in 2007, Beidas lost to John Isner of Georgia in that year’s second-round of the NCAA Individual Championships.

He moves on to next face the winner of the Adam Hubble-Thomas Shubert match set for Wednesday between two qualifiers.

UCLA freshman Marcos Giron won his first-round match beating Javier Pulgar-Garcia of Spain, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-3.

All eight first-round doubles matches were completed on Tuesday with two big upsets as the top two seeded teams fell.

Joshua Graves and Rudolph Siwy defeated No. 1-seeded Marvin Barker and Darian King, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-6, and Jeremy Hunter Nicholas and Javier Pulgar-Garcia beat No. 2-seeded Boris Bakalov and Kiryi Harbatsiuk, 6-3, 3-6, 13-11

Following a wheelchair exhibition on center court at 10 a.m., on Wednesday, the tournament’s top-seeded Steve Johnson of Orange, the current NCAA singles champion from USC, will take on Thousand Oaks’ Kyle McMorrow.
