Cox Receives Final Aegon Championships Wild Card
The British No.4 Dan Cox has been awarded the fifth and final wild card into the Aegon Championships, which starts at The Queen’s Club on Monday.
Cox, currently ranked No.225, joins fellow Britons Andy Murray, Dan Evans and James Ward in the draw. The other wild cards were given to the World No.3, Stanislas Wawrinka and the 2006 Wimbledon semifinalist, Marcos Baghdatis.
Leon Smith, the Great Britain Davis Cup captain, said: “Dan has improved significantly in the last year which has seen his ranking move to a career high. At 23 years old, his best years are still ahead of him and he now needs more experience and exposure at ATP Challenger and Tour level. Dan is very quick and powerful and is technically very solid so he has qualities that can be effective on grass courts.”
As well as current Grand Slam champions Murray and Wawrinka, the Aegon Championships line-up also includes the World No.6 Tomas Berdych, the 2011 runner-up Jo Wilfried Tsonga, the youngest player inside the world’s Top 20 Grigor Dimitrov, and four-time champion Lleyton Hewitt. French Open semifinalist Ernests Gulbis will also compete for one of the oldest, biggest and most prestigious trophies in tennis.
“We are absolutely thrilled with the field of players coming to the Aegon Championships,” said Tournament Director, Ross Hutchins. “With the current Wimbledon and Australian Open champions, the World No.6, former champions and young exciting players all playing, our spectators are in for a fantastic week of tennis at The Queen’s Club.”
David Macmillan, Chief Marketing Officer of Aegon UK, added: “The field of players that Ross Hutchins and the team have assembled for the Aegon Championships is fabulous, and everyone at Aegon is looking forward to a wonderful week of tennis.”
