World No.1 and top seed Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) will make her first ever Australian Open quarterfinals appearance after a confident victory on day seven at Melbourne Park.

In today’s opening match in Rod Laver Arena, Wozniacki defeated Anastasija Sevastova (LAT) in straight sets to reach the final eight without conceding a set so far in the tournament. No.9 seed Li Na (CHN) was also too strong for No.8 seed Victoria Azarenka (BLR) and will now meet the winner of tonight’s headline match between former champion Maria Sharapova (RUS) and Andrea Petkovic (GER) in the quarterfinals.

In the men’s draw, defending champion Roger Federer (SUI) lost the second set against Tommy Robredo (ESP) before closing the match in four sets and could meet Andy Roddick (USA) in a blockbuster quarterfinal. No.3 seed Novak Djokovic (SRB) won twice as many winners in a comfortable fourth round victory against No.14 seed Nicolas Almagro (ESP) in Hisense Arena, while No.6 seed Tomas Berdych (CZE) also booked his place in the quarterfinals by defeating No.9 seed Fernando Verdasco (ESP) in straight sets in Margaret Court Arena.

The 2011 Australian Open Junior Championships commenced today, with No.1 boys’ seed Jiri Vesely (CZE), Loy Yang Power Traralgon International champion Andres Artunedo Martinavarr (ESP) and SerbianMiki Jankovic (younger brother of world No.8 Jelena Jankovic) progressing to the second round.  After losing to Australian star Sam Stosur in the opening round of the women’s draw, No.3 seed Lauren Davis (USA) boosted her confidence with a first round win and will be in contention to claim the girls’ title.

Optus 18s Australian Championship winner Sean Berman (AUS) also enjoyed a straight sets victory while No.10 seed Andrew Whittington (AUS) won his first round match in three sets.

Over 43,173 fans passed through the gates during the day session, a record crowd for the first Sunday of the Australian Open.
