– Five Americans – Taylor Fritz, John Isner, Steve Johnson, Tennys Sandgren and Jack Sock – have reached the US Clay quarterfinals for the second year in a row, and the third time since the event moved to Houston in 2001.

– This is also the second straight year that four past champions are among the final eight: John Isner (2013), Steve Johnson (2017), Ivo Karlovic (2007) and Jack Sock (2015).

– At 39-years-old Ivo Karlovic is the oldest US Clay quarterfinalist in the Open Era. He’s the oldest quarterfinalist at an ATP World Tour event since 39-year-old Tommy Haas at Stuttgart in 2017, and is bidding to be the oldest semifinalist at an ATP event since 40-year-old Jimmy Connors at San Francisco in 1993.

– The night session Friday features the singles and doubles champions from the Miami Open. John Isner will look to extend his winning streak to nine matches, while Bob and Mike Bryan will look to win their eighth match in a row.

– John Isner enters Friday’s match with 9,981 career aces. He is bidding to be the fourth player to reach the 10,000 ace milestone, joining Ivo Karlovic (12,604 through two rounds here this week), Roger Federer (10,463) and Goran Ivanisevic (10,131). Isner has hit 364 aces in his 24 career US Clay matches.

– Six-time doubles champions Bob and Mike Bryan won 40th career US Clay match on Thursday and will be playing for a spot in their ninth final at this event. Friday night will be the 55th time the duo has faced Max Mirnyi. The Bryans own a 31-23 record against Mirnyi, who has faced them with 22 different partners.

Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship at River Oaks Country Club

River Oaks Country Club is hosting a professional tennis tournament for the 84th time when the 2018 Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship is held April 7-15. River Oaks first hosted its own tournament, The River Oaks International, in 1931, and its roster of former champions includes Jack Kramer, Tony Trabert, Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, Ken Rosewall, Ivan Lendl, Guillermo Vilas and James Blake. Houston is the 21st city to host the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship. The tournament came to Houston in 2001, and has been hosted at River Oaks since 2008. Started in 1910 by the USTA, the 2018 tournament will be the 108th competition for the Clay Court Championship. The 2017 singles title was won by American Steve Johnson while the doubles champions were Chile’s Julio Peralta and Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos. The tournament beneficiary are the National Junior Tennis & Learning programs of the Houston Tennis Association. More information about the tournament can be found at www.mensclaycourt.com.

Editors Note: Why do we post all of this info you ask? Because tennis needs sponsors and FANS and players, etc… and did I mention SPONSORS! Sponsors are the “lifeblood” of the sport. This tournament was not run into the ground by the “undertakers”… You know like Los Angeles, and MEMPHIS, and how many tennis tourneys did the state of California have? Ticket prices must be lowered globally. When one percenters say tennis is very expensive to attend, then tennis is overpriced! Back in the day ticket prices varied, but even the highest price seat was reasonable. And back in the day the sponsors money paid the players not the seat holders. And upgrades to stadiums and venues….

All people want is the same.

Shade. Restrooms. Water. And watching tennis from stadiums that aren’t ginormous…. Or not paying $25 for parking (cash)… (no receipt)…. Before your tennis day even starts. (LJ)
