CASH AND KADHE CAPTURE PACIFIC COAST MEN’S DOUBLES TITLE

Top-seeded OSU Duo Defeats Stanford’s Fawcett and Romanwicz 7-6 (1), 6-4

Representing Oklahoma State University, the doubles team of Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe upheld their No. 1 seed to take the title of the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship, downing Stanford’s third-seeded Thomas Fawcett and Maciek Romanowicz 7-6 (1), 6-4 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

Competing in breezy but mostly sunny conditions, Cash and Kadhe used a combination of what Kadhe termed their “aggressive, big-serving, chance-taking” strategy to claim the straight-set victory.

“We like to keep the pressure on, so we’re always aggressive,” said Kadhe, “especially with our volleys and overheads. We like to put away every shot we can get to.”

The two All-Americans have played together for only two semesters at nationally-ranked No. 5 OSU. Cash, who hails from Great Britain, and Kadhe, from India, displayed powerful strokes and an uncanny knack for resilience in tense rallies.

The duo claimed the first set tiebreak 7-1. The decisive second set was clinched when Cash/Kadhe broke Fawcett’s serve to take a 3-2 lead, which they never relinquished.

“We knew the great history of this event coming in,” said Cash, “and we wanted to put our names up there with past champions like (John) McEnroe. When you play at this level, you know about the Pacific Coast and we knew we wanted to win it.”

Named “Club of the Year” for 2011 by the San Diego District Tennis Association and one of the “Top 50 Tennis Resorts in the World” by Tennis Resorts Online, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club’s reputation as a top tennis destination started when it attracted its first major tournament – the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship in 1942. The tournament is one of the five-oldest tennis events in the world and the second oldest tennis event in the United States. First held in 1890 at The Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, California, the event was created to promote the sale of real estate on the Monterey peninsula. The original concept pitted the best players from the East versus those from the West. This coast-to-coast rivalry was the inspiration for the Davis Cup. Past winners of the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship include Jack Kramer, Ted Schroeder, Bobby Riggs, Pancho Segura, Don Budge, Tony Trabert, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Arthur Ashe, Dennis Ralston, John McEnroe, and many other world-class champions.

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club will also be hosting the USTA National Hard Court Championships for Women’s 50-90 age groups and La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club Hard Court Tournament for Men’s 60-85 age groups on Monday, May 9, through Sunday, May 15.
