It’s been a long trip and it showed. Jack Sock, looking a little fatigued and distracted, went out of the first round of the BNP Paribas Masters here 6-2, 6-3 to the experienced Serb, Victor Troicki.

“Yea, it’s been a pretty amazing six weeks for me,” Sock said in the renovated Omnipalais at Bercy. “I’ve been playing a lot deeper into the draws – a final, a semi, quarter-finals in Beijing. Played some good tennis and I’m happy the way I finished the year.”

Australians leave home for months on end but six weeks on the road is a lot for Americans who start hankering for home comforts a bit sooner.

“Yes, it was long,” Sock told Tennis Radio Network. “It was disappointing today but Victor played some good tennis and I couldn’t take advantage of a little chance I gave myself in the second set. But playing more matches has given me confidence and will help me going into next year.”

Sock’s ATP ranking has moved up to 25 in the world as a result of a new found consistency which included some big highlights for the young American. “Winning Houston was obviously a highlight,” he said. “Winning an ATP title was something I had set out to do.”

Before Novak Djokovic emerged to start the evening session with a slightly subdued but untroubled 7-5, 6-3 victory over the Brazilian left hander Tomas Bellucci, Roger Federer, fresh from his victory in Basel, offered further evidence that he does not consider himself anywhere close to retirement.

Some observers had assumed that the Rio OIympics next summer might be the sign off time for one of the all time greats of the sport but don’t bet on it.

“I never said I was going to be done at Rio,” Federer said. “I just said that was a long time goal. I’m playing good tennis, feeling good about my game. It’s been a fun year. My body and my mind is all in the right place. Rio not around the corner but it’s not far off any more. As long as I don’t know when the end is, that’s how you plan – into infinity if you like.”

So there you have it. Roger Federer might play forever.
