ATP World Tour players Feliciano Lopez and Mardy Fish traded strokes with enthusiastic Washington, D.C. juniors at the Takoma Community Center on Tuesday. It is one of many facilities benefitting from the Emirates Returns Program.

“I think it’s good to be here playing with the kids,” said Lopez. “It’s good to see how companies like Emirates have such great programs to get the kids involved in the sport. I think they can learn so much about tennis. It’s not about winning and losing. You have to be good with other players. You can take so many things away from the game.”

Accompanied by Citi Open tournament director Jeff Newman and Emirates Airline Sales Manager Barry Brenig, the players and kids took to the hard courts located in Ward 4, which were resurfaced last year following a grant from the program. Emirates Tuesday also donated $5,000 of equipment to the DC Department of park and Recreation that manages the facility and $50,000 to the Citi Open’s non-profit owner and beneficiary, the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation.

“It’s great to see these kids enjoying our great sport,” Fish said. “That is, getting some of these young kids, who might have never played tennis, together and put a racquet in their hands and see how they do.”
