Collegiate Challenge: Results from Day 1

While there was certainly a lot going on in Stadium 1 yesterday at the BNP Paribas Open, plenty was happening on the Practice Courts, too, as the Collegiate Challenge got off to an exciting start.

In the tournament’s first match up, top-ranked Oklahoma took on unranked Purdue and came away with a 4-0 victory, earning a spot in today’s Semifinal.

The second match of the day pitted Columbia (29) against Cal-Berkeley (28). Spectators certainly expected a close match, but Columbia proved too strong yesterday. After taking the doubles point, Columbia went on to win singles matches at lines 1, 3, and 5 to clinch the match 4-1. Cal’s lone victory came at line 6 singles. Columbia faces top-ranked Oklahoma in today’s Semifinal.

Next up was USC (4) versus Tulsa (20). The Trojans had a lot to prove after having lost to Tulsa last month. Coach Peter Smith made sure his team took care of business in the Desert, sweeping the Hurricanes 4-0 and securing a berth in the Semifinals later today.

The final match of Day 1 saw unranked BYU take on #3 Baylor. The Bears overpowered the Cougars, winning the doubles point and 3 singles points to complete the Semifinal bracket where they’ll face USC at 2pm this afternoon.

Admission to the Collegiate Challenge is open to any General Admission ticket holders. All matches will be played on Practice Courts 3-8 starting at 8:30am following a 7:30am warm up.
