MURRAY MISTAKEN FOR RORY MCILROY  |

Jamie Murray and John Peers started the 2015 ATP World Tour season in strong form, winning their fifth team title with victory at the Brisbane International presented by Suncorp. This week, they are looking to back it up with another trophy at the Heineken Open in Auckland.

ATPWorldTour.com caught up with the British/Australian duo towards the end of 2014 to discuss The Last Time…

I cooked for myself or someone else?

Murray: I probably cooked for my wife at some point in the past three months! It doesn’t happen so often… It was chicken and rice in a sauce with tomatoes and onions.

Peers: When I was back home in Australia and had access to a barbeque, which was just before going to Asia.

I shared a hotel room with another player?

Murray: I shared with Jonathan Marray in Winston-Salem earlier this year.

Peers: And I shared with Jonathan Marray in Winston-Salem last year.

I forgot a family member’s birthday?

Murray: Not long ago… It was my aunt’s birthday. It’s always the same. You know the day before and then it comes to the day, you do things and it passes.

Peers: My cousin’s in July.

Being famous helped me?

Murray: I was going to Indian Wells this year. As I was getting on the plane, the pilot walked past me and said ‘Hello’. For some reason, he said, ‘Is everything OK with your seat?’. And actually I had a problem with my booking, which I explained to him. Anyway, I went and sat down and he came up to me and says, ‘Mr. Murray, I think we can find a better seat for you’ and he took me through to business class.

I strung my own racquet?

Murray: Probably when I was 19 or 20. I used to string them all the time at home in Scotland.

Peers: Two years ago…

Murray: I don’t know if I’d remember how to do it now.

Peers: It’s not really hard to do, it just takes time if you haven’t done it.

Murray: It’s just the start that’s the hardest part. Once you’ve got two or three strings, then it’s easy enough.

I was asked if I was a tennis player?

Peers: Yesterday, in accreditation.

Murray: I was on the train. I was going to play golf with Nigel Sears. I was minding my own business and this guy walks up to me and goes, ‘Are you Rory McIlroy?’ I looked up and he was being serious! He couldn’t believe that he’d met Rory McIlroy. I said I wasn’t Rory McIlroy and he looked at me and walked off.

So we play golf, then I get back on the train to go back to London. A voice says, ‘Are you Rory McIlroy?’ I look up and it’s the same guy! I said, ‘No’. Then he said, ‘Are you Jamie Murray?’ I said, ‘Yes!’ He said, ‘Are you sure you’re Jamie Murray?’ I said, ‘Yeah’. He said, ‘Do you ever get mistaken for Rory McIlroy?’ I said, ‘No…’

Peers: Just today!

Murray: He looks at me again, looks out the window and he just walks away. Never to be seen again. It’s the two most surreal episodes of my life! I did have a cap on, and my hair was coming out at the back like his, but still it was ridiculous, completely ridiculous.

Peers: When was the last time Rory caught a train to go and play golf?!

I missed a flight?

Murray: Going up to Scotland last year. We were in the lounge at Heathrow. It was the only gate in Terminal 5 that you need to get a bus to. We turned up half an hour before, we weren’t late, but they’d closed it all. The lady said they had been calling my name on the tannoy, but they hadn’t because I’d just been walking to the gate. We had to wait four hours for the next flight and I was only going home for two days. I was gutted.

Peers: Flying to DC this year, I was stuck in transit.

I had an unusual fan request?

Murray: I signed a photograph in Tokyo this year of my wife. I recognised the lady as well, from last year. I was signing a tennis ball, then all of a sudden I started signing and I was like, ‘That’s Ale!’ [My wife] was loving it when I told her. She thought it was so funny!

Peers: Some kids last week in Stockholm asked me for my racquets…

Murray: Yeah, that’s quite a normal request. People ask you if they can have one, and I’m like, ‘Well I’ve only got four…’
