The Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer rivalry will add another chapter to its lore after the soon-to-be top two players in the world won their respective quarterfinal matches at the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Friday. Djokovic took care of David Ferrer 6-4, 6-2 to book his semifinal spot before Federer downed Julien Benneteau 7-6(4), 6-0.

Rafael Nadal headed back home from Shanghai to Majorca on a circuitous route via Moscow and Barcelona but before leaving China he insisted his world traveling wasn’t over for 2014. After suffering the onset of appendicitis at the Shanghai Rolex Masters but opting against immediate surgery, he was able to play against fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.
Rafael Nadal and a whole host of other seeds are out, but the third-round schedule at the Shanghai Rolex Masters is still an intriguing one. Unsurprisingly, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer experienced very different fates at the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Wednesday. Struggling with appendicitis upon his return from three months away due to a wrist injury, Nadal lost his opening match in straight sets to fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Federer almost bowed out as well despite being a heavy favorite against Leonardo Mayer, but the Swiss saved five match points and survived in a third-set tiebreaker.
