Nadal Delays Surgery And Will Play On

Rafael Nadal headed back home from Shanghai to Majorca on a circuitous route via Moscow and Barcelona but before leaving China he insisted his world traveling wasn’t over for 2014. After suffering the onset of appendicitis at the Shanghai Rolex Masters but opting against immediate surgery, he was able to play against fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.

Few were surprised Nadal lost his opening match after four days of hospital treatment and both medical opinion and common sense now decrees he should have the offending appendix removed as soon as possible. But the world no.2 is insistent he wants to fulfill his remaining obligations for the season and play the Swiss Indoors event in Basel beginning a week Monday, followed by the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris and the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Addressing the subject of surgery, Nadal was adamant. “I want to do it at the end of the year, not now,” he insisted. “My thoughts are continue with Basel, Paris and London.”

Apart from winning the French Open, this has been one of Nadal’s most frustrating years. He was hurt early in January’s Australian Open final against Stan Wawrinka, was out-powered by Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon and then injured a wrist soon after which sidelined him for three months, forcing him to miss the defense of his US Open title.

Nadal only returned to competition at last week’s China Open in Beijing so he has played just nine matches in the second half of the year. “Is true that the last few months I was not in the best of luck,” he said. I didn’t have the best of luck since Wimbledon.

“I was playing a good year, very positive year. After that I was unlucky with the wrist, what’s going on now. Now remain three more tournaments for me. We’ll see. Obviously the last couple of months have been little bit hard for me.”

Nadal should arrive in Barcelona later today and his first port of call will be to visit his trusted doctor Angel Luiz Cotorro who is believed to be in favor of immediate surgery. So too is uncle and coach Toni Nadal who never travels to Asia with his nephew and leaves the coaching duties to Francisco Roig.

After losing 6-3, 7-6 to his friend and Davis Cup team-mate Lopez, Nadal insisted that four days of strong anti-biotic treatment had left him feeling far from 100% fit and he felt dizzy after the match. And he acknowledged he took a big risk in playing.

“Yes, I need to do the surgery,” he said. “I talked with the doctor in Spain. Is a lot of risk when that happens one time. Even if now the problem is under control, it’s obviously going to come back. I don’t want to come back, to have the same problems, when I am in Australia, or when I am in Indian Wells or Miami or when I am in Roland Garros. So I’m going to do it before the end of the year.”
