Which turns out to be appendix surgery (scheduled for November 3); he is through for the year. He'll have to rest for more than a month before resuming training.

What is it about Maria Sharapova and three hour matches? She had led 5-1 in the second set, had three match points, and failed to convert. She lost the set on a double-fault. It meant that she had to stay out there for three hours and nine minutes -- and all of it effectively for nothing.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and wife Jelena Ristic welcomed a healthy baby boy on Tuesday in Nice. The Serb tweeted the news to his followers on Wednesday morning, announcing the baby is called Stefan.
Milos Raonic kept his World Tour Finals chances afloat by fighting past Donald Young 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-6(2) in the second round of the Swiss Indoors Basel on Thursday. It was an especially important victory because fellow London contender David Ferrer advanced to the quarterfinals at the Valencia Open. Ferrer downed fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-2.
One race ends, another begins. Maria Sharapova can surely forget about the year-end #1. The question now is, can she manage to hold off Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep in the contest for #2? Maybe Sharapova was still tired after her opening match, but this wasn't really competitive. It took only an hour and fifteen minutes, and Sharapova won a feeble 40% of the points.
The ITF has announced the draws for the two Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Zone Group I second round play-off ties taking place on 24-26 October. The two winners of these ties will remain in Zone Group I in 2015, while the two losers will be relegated to 2015 Zone Group II.
