Like her sadly absent countrywoman Li Na, US Open semi-finalist Peng Shuai is something of a late bloomer when it comes to contending for Grand Slam singles titles. However the 28 year-old’s success in New York is even more amazing after she revealed undergoing surgery 16 years ago to correct a congenital heart defect that was genetically inherited from her mother.

NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED FOR DAVIS CUP WORLD GROUP SEMIFINALS & PLAY-OFFS

The ITF has announced the official team nominations for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group semifinals, World Group play-offs ties taking place on September 12-14. The winners of the two semifinals will contest the 2014 World Group Final on November 21-23. The winners of the eight World Group play-offs will qualify for the 2015 World Group, while the losers will contest their respective Zone Group I competition in 2015.

Although there have been a few upsets along the way at this year's U.S. Open, they have--unlike on the women's side--been few and far between. That means the quarterfinal lineup is a blockbuster one, with eight seeds having managed to survive and advance. Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Stan Wawrinka are all still alive.

Well, that wasn't quite the night session that had taken place 24 hours (or less!) earlier. On Monday, Victoria Azarenka overcame Aleksandra Krunic in three sets before Kei Nishikori outlasted Milos Raonic in five. The end result was a tie for the latest finish in U.S. Open history, with Nishikori and Raonic wrapping things up at 2:26 a.m.

Top seed Djokovic, the winner in 2011 who has played the last four finals at Flushing Meadows, dominated 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 as the top seed stamped his authority on German Philipp Kohlschreiber.

CiCi Bellis struck the first serve on the show courts shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the U.S. Open. More than 15 hours later, Labor Day action finally ended with a winning volley by Kei Nishikori. When it was all said and done, Nishikori's match against Milos Raonic tied the latest finish in tournament history at 2:26 a.m.
