EDITORS NOTE: the match finished at around 2:30 in the morning. It may sound like fun to any or all but it’s NOT ! What other sport do you play into the middle of the night ? How can you ask your body to perform at its highest level ? What time does all the staff that worked travel home and what time do they start again the next day ? Night tennis is ridiculous ! BOUCHARD AND RAONIC FALL AT THE U.S. OPEN

Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC) and Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) were seeking quarter-final berths at the U.S. Open on Labour Day Monday at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, New York.

Raonic played the night cap on Arthur Ashe Stadium against Japan’s Kei Nishikori whom he beat a few weeks ago at Wimbledon. The tournament’s fifth seed got off to a quick start, jumping out to a 4-1, 0-40 lead. Nishikori fought back, but lost serve at 4-5 to give Raonic the first set. Both players broke serve twice in the second set, but Nishikori was the more consistent in the tiebreak and managed to level the match. Raonic saved eight break point chances and won the tiebreak to take a two sets to one lead. Nishikori stormed back to take the final two sets and the match 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-7(6), 7-5, 6-4 after over four hours of play and tie the record for the latest finish in the history of the U.S. Open.

For the first time this season, Bouchard was stopped before the semifinals of a Grand Slam, falling 7-6(2), 6-4 to Russian Ekaterina Makarova in one hour, 44 minutes. The 20-year-old Canadian was down a break for the majority of the first set before breaking at 4-5 to get back on serve. Makarova was the one who dominated the tiebreak to take a one set lead. Bouchard called for the trainer trailing 2-3 in the second set as she was struggling with the heat and humidity. Bouchard managed to level the second frame at 4-4, but Makarova stepped up in the final two games to secure her place in the quarter-finals where she will face Victoria Azarenka.

“The heat affected me, but fatigue also slowed me down,” Bouchard said after the match. “My last two night matches were tough and I wasn’t 100 percent when I stepped on the court today, and I started feeling light-headed in the second set.”

Raonic disputait le dernier match de la soirée dans le stade Arhtur Ashe contre le Japonais Kei Nishikori, qu’il avait battu il y a quelques semaines à Wimbledon. La 5e tête de série du tournoi a connu un départ canon pour mener rapidement 4-1, 0-40, sur le service de son adversaire. Nishikori a amorcé une remontée avant de concéder de nouveau son service à 4-5 pour donner une avance d’une manche au Canadien. Les deux joueurs se sont brisés à deux reprises au cours de la deuxième manche, mais le Japonais a été le plus constant des deux au jeu décisif pour créer l’égalité. Raonic a dû effacer huit balles de bris au cours de la troisième manche, mais c’est néanmoins lui qui a eu le dernier mot pour se redonner une priorité de deux manches à un. Cependant, Nishikori est revenu en force pour arracher les deux dernières manches et se sauver avec un gain de 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-7(6), 7-5 et 6-4 après plus de quatre heures de jeu, égalant ainsi le record de l’histoire des Internationaux des États-Unis du match s’étant terminé le plus tard.

Pour la première fois cette saison, Bouchard a été freinée avant les demi-finales d’une épreuve du Grand Chelem. En effet, la Russe Ekaterina Makarova a pris la mesure de la Canadienne en deux manches de 7-6(2) et 6-4 après une heure et 44 minutes de jeu. À la première manche, l’athlète de 20 ans a tiré de l’arrière par un bris de service presque tout le long avant de finalement ravir le service de son adversaire à 4-5. C’est cependant Makarova qui a dominé le bris d’égalité en prenant rapidement les devants. Après le cinquième jeu de la deuxième manche, Bouchard a fait appel aux soigneurs, visiblement affectée par la chaleur et l’humidité. Même si elle a trouvé les ressources nécessaires pour s’accrocher et niveler la marque à 4-4, c’est la Russe qui a eu le dernier mot et qui accède donc aux quarts de finale des Internationaux des États-Unis. Makarova croisera le fer avec Azarenka pour une place au carré d’as.

« La chaleur m’a affectée, mais c’est aussi la fatigue accumulée qui m’a ralentie », a indiqué Bouchard après son affrontement. « Mes deux matchs précédents, disputés en soirée, ont été très éprouvants. Je ne me sentais pas à 100 % quand je me suis présentée sur le terrain aujourd’hui. Puis, j’ai été victime d’étourdissements à la deuxième manche ».
