DOREEN GONZALES EXPLORES THE LIFE AND CAREER OF TENNIS LEGEND PANCHO GONZALEZ  |

Author Doreen Gonzales and members of the Gonzalez family have released a biography entitled “Tennis Legend Pancho Gonzalez” that covers the life and amazing career of the great champion. Pancho’s immigrant parents could not afford lessons for him so he taught himself to play tennis on Los Angeles’ public parks and eventually became the best player in the world for an unparalleled 10 years. He is considered by many to be the greatest player ever.

The book includes many of Pancho’s incredible feats such as his come from behind victory against Ted Schroeder in their US Championship final or when he defeated the two best players in the world, Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall, in the same night at the age of 38. At the age of 40, he was inducted into the International Hall of Fame while still an active player. He continued to play well into his 40’s defeating the best players in the world. He was ranked No. 6 in the world at age 41. At the age of 42 he defeated Rod Laver in five sets before a sellout crowd at Madison Square Garden. He holds the record as the oldest player to win an ATP tournament winning a five set final when he was almost 44 years old. In 1999, Sports Illustrated voted him one of its top twenty favorite athletes of the 20th century.

Doreen has written several nonfiction books for young people, including Cesar Chavez: Leader for Migrant Farmworkers. Pancho‘s family worked with Doreen providing her several family memories and pictures. The book is written for kids 10 years and older but is a good read for all ages including adults. Pancho overcame many obstacles both on and off the court to pursue his dream. His story shows that all kids-regardless of race, creed, or color-can fulfill their dreams if they try hard enough. The book is now available for $16.95 at panchogonzalez.com or through Amazon. Quantity discounts and special pricing are available for nonprofit entities.
