Young guns to face each other in Aegon Classic opener

Two of the WTA Tour’s most exciting young stars, 17-year-olds Belinda Bencic and Donna Vekic, will face each other in the first round of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham. Saturday’s draw threw the teenagers together what should be a showcase of burgeoning talent.

“It will be a very interesting match because we are the two youngest players in the Top 100,” said Vekic, who was runner-up to Daniela Hantuchova in last year’s Aegon Classic final. “I’m really looking forward to playing her. I know it will be a tough match.”

Vekic could face Hantuchova again in a replay of last year’s final if she can get past Bencic. Hantuchova, as one of the tournament’s top eight seeds, receives a bye into round two. The tournament’s top seed, Ana Ivanovic, has a bye before taking on either Mona Barthel or Ajla Tomljanovic in round two. Second seed Samantha Stosur will take on the winner of Anna Schmiedlova and Christina McHale.

In another notable first round match, 21-year-old Paula Ormachaea takes on 43-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm, the oldest player in the singles draw.
