Dustin Brown is one of the more popular players on tour, far more popular than his current ranking of 101st and his career-high ranking of 89th would suggest. He is well known and even loved for his dreadlocks, his willingness to interact with fans on social media, and of course his incredible shot-making.

At 29 years old, Brown may finally be in the additional business of winning. Last summer, the German reached the third round of Wimbledon as a qualifier and beat Lleyton Hewitt in the process. His singles results so far in 2014 have been modest, but he at least managed to qualify at the January event in Doha and make a run to the quarterfinals.

Brown is back in a quarterfinal this week at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship and he has done it in extremely impressive fashion. The Jamaican-born fan favorite made quick 6-1, 6-2 work of Rhyne Williams then upset top seed and defending champion John Isner 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-4.

Against Isner, Brown could have been content with this spectacular example of his aforementioned shot-making: http://www.tennisnow.com/News/Video-Dustin-Brown-s-Ridiculous-Tweener-Winner-ag.aspx

Instead, he battled back from a disappointing loss of the second set–during which he had two match points and double-faulted on one of them–to to keep his hopes alive by saving all five of the break points he faced in the deciding set. After two hours and 19 minutes, Brown secured his first-ever victory over a Top 10 opponent.

He took to Twitter afterward to share some enthusiastic thoughts: “Not Sure What 2 Say… Wooaaaww… Siccckk!!!! #CareerHigh… Thx 4 All THE GREAT MESSAGES AND CALLA AND ALL!!! LUV U GUYS!! #TEAMDREDDY”.

Brown is correct in suggesting that he will reach a new career-high ranking. Even if he loses to Sam Querrey on Friday, he is still projected to climb to No. 87 in the world. If he beats Querrey and reaches the semis, 45 more points would put him at a projected spot of 74th.

A better ranking, of course, means automatic entry into more tournaments. It means more Dustin Brown. And more Dustin Brown means more fun for tennis.
